As you could see from the ratings, the experience was very good. We got hit with hail damage late fall / early summer of 2008. There was obvious damage to the siding, but to the untrained eye, like myself, I did not see any obvious damage to the roof. The insurance inspector assigned to my home looked the entire house over and found only damage to the siding as well. With that, I was not in a very big hurry to get the work done. I started shopping around for quotes for the siding work in the fall. I had 4 businisses look at the damage and make estimates themselves. Chris Olson, from Berkeshire, was the last company I had over. Not only was Chris most willing to work with me on the siding to get the job done right while still being the most affordable, he also went up on the roof and found damage no one else did. He explained that there was hail damage that was missed not only on the roof, but in several areas in the fascia. After he pointed out the fascia damage, even I could see it from the ground. With no cost to me, Chris said he would contact the insurance company and get someone else out to my home to go over the damage with him. I think the most I did was make a phone call to the insurance company and provide them Chris's name so they could get in touch with him. After that, he handled everything else. After the insurance company sent a two new people to meet with Chris at my home, they agreed with everything that Chris had identified. The damage identified was greater than 4 times the original assessment. This is something that would not have been rightfully replaced without Chris's help. By the time the paperwork had been updated and everything worked out with the insurance company, winter was rolling in quick. When they were able to get going, the snow was just starting to hit, so they had some "less than ideal" working conditions to get the job done in. The temps got dangerously cold a couple days, so there were a few delays once the work started, but they were still able to do my 4000 sq ft rambler with a 4 stall attached garage in a 3 or 4 short days. It seemed very reasonable considering the difficulty factor. Also, along the way, the Berkeshire team had identified things that had originally been done on the house that they would consider below their standards. Bob Clank (not sure the spelling of the last name) was the job supervisor and called me and gave me the options if there was ever a question on how to move forward. In several cases, they ultimately just upgraded their work within the cost of the original estimate, both in materials in some cases and approach in others to ensure the highest quality of work. Chris even let me borrow one of his specialty tools for a short time free of charge so I could do a little work myself instead paying them to do it. It was a small gesture, but those are the things I noticed. There was much to praise them for, and little to complain about. The only minor things that could have been improved is the following: a) Many of the workers were not strong in English. I had the language barrier thing going on a few times without Bob's help. b) When they were tearing off the old roof in the middle of the day on a weekend, they had materials and nails all over the driveway once when I needed to leave. It would have been more helpful if they had kept that area clear when it was known I'd be home. I had to help clear the way so I could get out. c) They got a small spot of tar on the side of the house. Chris said he would come back and take care of cleaning it off, and he was true to his word and took care of it. They were all so minor they were hardly worth mentioning, but I wanted to be fair in my assessment and disclose everything. That was as rough as it got. I've heard some absolute horror stories from other people I knew who were getting work done from other places at the same time I was getting my work done, and Berkeshire didn't drag me into any of that dysfunctional stuff. Again, overall, Berkeshire achieved my most important goals, and I would recommend them. Chris and Bob were true, honest professionals and were pleasures to work with.
