He talked about having25 years of experience in deck building talking me out of about everything I wanted, but I looked to his wisdom of 25 years. I wanted a deck not attached to the house, boards attached with screws rather than nails. He said " Decks built this way usually settle over time and become unleveled with the house." The previous deck was unattached and never settled. So I ended up with an attached deck. It started out ok, his son came to help him with some of the heavy work. Then for his sons spending money, he had him nail gun the boards in. ( we would have rather had screws, but the "nails would never come out")another thing in the many decks that he had built he recommended. The son did not want to be here, the morning he used the standup nail shooter, they were shot in at angles with tips above the surface. No check was done to make sure this was not a problem, the son arrived late and was out of here as soon as he could leave. My husband ended up fixing the nails that were above the surface. I changed the stairs making them smaller and off the side of the deck. The stairs were built poorly the rail had splinters that were not sanded out. My planters boxed were not going to be built. as he was packing up I asked about them, he cobbled together a couple of boxes out of scraps, far from what I hoped and was promised and he thought they were a great, first time in 25 years he had done that! It was like he did not have the 25 years but a lot of those years were his fathers experience. Very disappointed I have regretted the decision to let him build the deck a lot in the last 3 years.
