I was a customer at this sale, along with about 50 others who were there when the doors opened. It had been advertised on estatesales.net as a one-day sale. it listed many, many items...with this exact wording "$5 Bag Sale and Thats A Garbage Bag Ladies For The Fabric $1 Furniture", and "IF IT DOESN'T FIT IN A BAG..LIKE LAMP TABLE DRESSER BOOKSHELF ETC................... ITS A DOLLAR Lots of Tools The basement is basically a Joann Fabric store!!! Every kind of material and fabric you would need to make anything and its stacked to the ceiling" it went on to list many interesting items, including a carousel horse and lots of vintage stuff.
They did not mention that the sale had been running since the Friday before and that this was basically the 'cleanout' of what was left (this was for the Wednesday following that Friday). I found this out after driving 2 hours and talking to a man who was there doing yard maintenance. I had emailed these people and asked about numbers and such, mentioning it was my first estate sale and that I would be driving some distance and would be bringing some friends from work. We exchanged about 5 emails and not once did she (Marnie Rodriguez) bring up the fact that the sale was in its final day and not its first. I rated them a B on responsiveness and punctuality (they opened right on time) - my beef is with their misleading advertising, which is the only, single way a person has of learning of the existence of the sale other than just driving by it by chance.
Needless to say, everyone else in line that morning was pretty much under the same impression as I had been. After the first few women entered the home and came out within minutes, reporting everything left was junk, and just strewn about everywhere, people were pretty disgusted. Several of them, like myself, still waited to go in as we had invested the time to drive and stand in line and all that.
There were a few nice things in the house, already sold (but some not being marked as such until you stated you wanted it (indeed, it was supposed to be a dollar, you were happy to get it) which was VERY frustrating, and unprofessional of the people).
I found $11 worth of 'salvage' and stood in line. People were trying to check out and expecting things to be $5 for whatever could fit in a garbage-bag-sized bag...oh, no...that was just for fabric items, they said. For the other things, they wanted to hand you a regular plastic grocery bag and THAT was $5 for whatever you could fit in it. People started getting mad so they got a little more sensible about it as we started quoting their advertisement words right back at them, but this was ridiculous. P.S. - they left the adjective "plastic" off the listing of the carousel horse - I realize the interpretation of the words 'carousel horse' (one of the listed items) is subjective, but what would you think if that's what you read, on a list of lots of vintage furniture and other items - no pics were provided on the site (which I suppose should have said something to me, but again...my first estate sale) - wooden, or plastic?
Another very disturbing thing, to me, is the vast discrepancy between the appearance of their site and the appearance of the persons running the sale. I double- and triple-checked the link to be sure I wasn't looking at the wrong site (heck, it's so far off from what I experienced at the house, I am still not 100% sure but the business names and addresses matched and all that). The man wore a wife-beater shirt and was tattooed all down his arms, and wore a dew-rag on his head (this is not to say anything against people who dress as such...I am not much of a snazzy dresser myself...this is just saying it is not the appearance I expected for the 'company representative' based on the appearance of the company website). I almost wonder if the people who own the site might have 'outsourced' the people running the sale and might not be aware of the appearance they present to the estate sale customer.
I do not know how they eventually performed for the people who actually hired them. I DO know this, though...the way they ran this sale was a HUGE disservice to anyone who may hire them from now on, as anyone fooled into going to this sale will most likely (I know I will) be very diligent to avoid sales sponsored by this firm in the future and thus cause other people trying to liquidate their estates to miss out on many potential customers. They tricked a lot of people and the words 'false advertising' were spoken more than once in that house and yard that day. I just don't think they should get away with that kind of behavior. I joined Angie's List today specifically so I could warn others about them. Thank you for reading my review.
