Very punctual and informative. Our neighbor's drive way was close to project and they made sure the neighbor knew that work would be done, and cars should be moved out of driveway. They said it would take two days, and that is what it took. All questions were answered promptly. Workmen showed up on time. Finished chimney and porch column look very nice. Fireplace was used once after the project and everything worked correctly. I would use this family owned company again for any masonry work. Adam Williams was the spokesperson and salesman for this job and was there when the work was done. We thought the price was reasonable for the amount of work to be done.
The work they did was fine (as far as I can tell). What they didn't do (and why) far outweighs that, though. I wouldn't recommend them and have ruled them out for additional projects we're planning.
The long version
The job was supposed to take a day and a half. At the end of the first day, the porch and steps were done. They had also removed most of the stonework for the flower box. This left some additional stones, some metal wiring, as well as all the dirt itself just sitting against the house, spilling over, and looking rather unpleasant. Fortunately, that was the end of the first day and the remainder of the work likely would go swimmingly.
Unfortunately, the rest never happened.
About a week later I started getting calls for payment, while I was still waiting for the job to be finished.
I asked about the flower box, which is still a pile of dirt and debris against my house. I assumed that they had sent someone with a truck come by to clear what's left but the driver had forgotten and the back office didn't know. They explained to me that they did not take the dirt or clear the debris for the flower box intentionally and had no plans to do so. Taking that as well as the rest of the waste (porch & flower box bricks) would have required them to load up the truck twice and make two trips. Even after talking this out on the phone, they did not understand my problem and insisted that they were done. In hindsight, I probably should have asked how much it costs per trip and just paid the extra to get it taken care of, since now I'll be doing that over my weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't think of that and don't really care to talk to them anymore.
While I was still on the phone with them, though, I then asked about the minor repair to my garage. I had hoped that it was simply forgotten and once reminded they would realize the mistake and make it right. They had planned on doing this work on the second day, but because they had "finished" the first day they were unable to find the time to get it done. Again, they saw no problem with this.
If the job was just my porch, this review would have probably been very good. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
Overall, what I've seen makes me question the thoroughness and care for their work. I can't imagine leaving something in such an obviously poor state because I don't want to take the time to clean it up. Perhaps worse is simply skipping the smallest part of the job because it's not worth my time anymore.
They've been around for a while, so I have to assume that all of their work is no so poor. The porch work indicates (from what I can see) that they have the potential to do good work. But, they don't seem to care about satisfying customers or following through if it involves more than one trip.
About the Ratings
I struggled with the ratings because of the weirdness of the job. They were very professional and prompt at the beginning and on the first day. The quality of the porch appears pretty good and the price (for what I thought I was getting) was a price I was happy with. Again, had the job been just the porch the ratings would have been very different.
The price took a hit since I'm paying for work they didn't do and now I'll be spending a few hours cleaning up what they didn't want to bother with.
The quality took a hit based on the flower box and skipping the garage work. Maybe I shouldn't penalize what they didn't do, but feel that quality of the job includes such things.
Responsiveness took a hit based on the complete lack of follow through even when presented with the problems. Whenever I had a concern, they didn't care.
When they did show up, they were very prompt and worked quickly. I didn't reduce punctuality for the times they didn't show up.
Professionalism was very high at the start and through the work they did do. Unfortunately, it was severely lacking in the follow through and completely absent in regards to making things right. I gave credit for what they did do well at the start, thus not an "F".
As for the overall ratings, I feel that the experience was actually worse than the sum of it's parts. Despite the things they did well, I can't stomach what they didn't do, which is now going to be a combination of me finishing some of the job and finding new companies to finish the work I can't do.
The work started on time based on the availability we discussed. Tom's team was very clean and at the end of each day made sure that all of their mess was cleaned up before they left for the day. At the end of their first day of work, I asked a question about having something else done, and he suggested a better way to do it. The next day my fiance spoke with him and he had brought the supplies for the project just in case and gave another fair price, so we had that done as well (sealing the line between the driveway and the house to prevent water from seeping in). We also talked to him the second day about adding gutter cleaning to his list, and again, we were given a fair price. Tom also never tried to charge us for anything that wasn't needed. In our original quote, he mentioned that we might need new limestone for the chimney. Once he got up there, he said that what we had was in good shape and there was no need to replace it (even though he had the new limestone with him already).
All work was completed in a timely manner, and the quality of everything seems to be really good. I would highly recommend them to anyone, and they will be our first call if/when we have more projects come up that we need done.
TKO was repairing a porch a few houses up the street so I asked them for a quote. A short while later Tom came down and gave me a quote for $450. I contacted three other providers but they could not be bothered with such a small job. I called Tom back and he performed the work the following day. The steps look great, they finished promptly and cleaned up after themselves.
I would definitely use them again.
expected. They had driven by a day before coming out to take a look at
the job then gave us two prices- one if they had to replace the entire
gutter and one if they were able to fix the exisiting one. They did not
have to replace the gutter and were done in less than 1/2 an hour. We
were very pleased with their work.
"Upon reviewing this post we have looked into this complaint and have since followed up with the customer. However we were unaware that an issue had come up until this complaint was posted by them. No inferior materials were used on this job. Any bricks layed or tuckpointing work done, was done with high strength mason mix. A re-build would have been warrantied for 5 years. This job was a partial rebuild with some tuckpointing in areas where needed. Although the job was completed in 2004 (8.5 years ago) the owner is still willing to look at the job and attempt to work with the customer to resolve this complaint."
Stu came over and took a look and gave me a very attractive estimate of $600 to take off the the top 6 rows and bebuild it properly. He refused to consider a surface tuckpointing which as he properly stated was not addressing the real issue of water infiltration. I was impressed by his candid approach and advice to do it correctly. I checked his company TKO on Angie's List and was reassured by positive reviews. I called him back the next day and he did the work as promised
