I have pictures, the letter from the Township and all other material electronically but it is too much to include here so I will attempt to summarize. It may be best to start with a quote from the letter the Charter Township of Independence gave us. "After a site visit on 7/29/14 by myself and the Building Inspector it was determined the work performed on the porch, stairs and walkway would not meet the minimum Michigan State Code requirements."
We ended up with stairs that ranged from a height of 6 inches to 11 inches, with pitches of of over an inch on the tread. The pitches were off on the walkway and landing. They poured the concrete on the walkway up to the top of the threshold. They replaced our copper downspout with PVC which they were going to "paint". Even after I told them they would have to put something under the front door to stop any water from coming in the house while they were powerwashing because they poured up to the top of the threshold, they did not, and water and concrete grit flowed into the house, onto the hardwood floors and into the tongue and groove. They cut our copper sills on the french doors down with a pair of shears, leaving rough exposed edges.
Here is their laughable response to fix some of our problems:

To finish the job we need to power wash, patch some areas of the concrete , paint the front downspout PVC pipe , add ashphalt to the driveway at the first step, remove front door shave bottom to adjust correctly to fit and remove and
raise the threshold to the front door above concrete grade, seal with polyurethane around front porch area and all areas where the concrete meets the house cleanup property and seal concrete. Thank you

Dino,
Before we proceed I would like a complete bulleted outline of all work left to be done
as well as the proposed remediations. Thank you.
Essentially they wanted to add asphalt to build up my driveway to reduce the 11 inch first step and take off my front door and shave the bottom so it could accommodate a higher threshold so it wouldn't look like the concrete was poured up to the top
There is more, it was a comedy of errors, an expensive comedy of errors. After months of back and forth we finally decided to stop communicating with SAS and take our own action.
Seeing that I don't live where the work was being performed, I was expecting this to be a logistical nightmare. I am happy to report that the communication between myself and the crew foreman couldn't have been any smoother. I appreciated the fact that any possible challenges related to our situation were clearly explained before the work began and any time I had a question I could call the foreman directly.
My mother-in-law and my wife were very impressed with the clean-up performed by the crew once the work was done. The exterior of the house was so pristine and everything placed exactly how it was prior to the excavation.
I can't say enough about how pleased we are with SAS Services, both with their work and their promises delivered. I have already given their number to others needing waterproofing work done and will certainly continue to sing their praises!
SEPTEMBER 2013
When I was getting my quotes I was really happy with how knowledgeable and nice my salesman was. When the job was done they were all nice and respectful. When doing the garage one of the doors inside the house next to the garage had shifted so it didn't close properly and they fixed it.
But, when doing the porch I was asked about the height of the porch. I told him that the previous porch was 2-3 inches higher and that what he was measuring from was not where someone would step to get into the house. I told him that where you step is about 2 inches higher than where he was measuring from. Since he would have had to redo the forms I think he decided to keep it as it was. After having the work done stepping out of my front porch is not comfortable because the height of the porch is too far away. I contacted my salesman about this and he eventually came to look at it after a few calls and months later. After not getting anywhere with the salesman I called the office to talk to the owner. When he came out to look I explained what had happened when the porch and steps were done. I've not heard back from them since that meeting.
I picked this company because they seemed knowledgable, were nice and had good reviews here on Angies List. Price with them was in the middle, not the least or most expensive.
JUNE 2015
DRIVEWAY IS NOW CRACKING! Since the work was done and no response from my prior issues my driveway has now developed a large crack in it. I have some rental houses and have never had a company completely ignore issues with a job they did. I have a job that needs to be done at one of my rentals and there is no way I'll call them for this.
sooner. We scheduled a day for them to come out and start the exterior work. I was told they?d be at my house early in the morning; I was given a two hour window. An hour after that window, I called the phone number on the handy folder they had provided. The receptionist had no record of my appointment, my estimate, nothing until I told her it was an
exterior job. She had to call the man in charge of the exterior jobs and then call me back. She told me that I had messed up the days and the appointment was for the following week. I didn?t believe I made a mistake as I was going out of
town on this particular day so had specifically made sure that they would be done early in the morning, but whatever, people make mistakes. They came out to the house the following week, I put a check in the mail, and the leak seemed to be fixed. A few weeks
later, I noticed that the basement was leaking (previously it had been the family room) directly below the area that they waterproofed. I called SAS back and an appointment was made for a Saturday. I received a call Friday morning to
cancel the appointment because it was supposed to rain and I was told I?d receive a call Friday afternoon to reschedule. It did not rain and I didn?t receive a call until the following Tuesday at 8PM (a little late I?d say for a professional phone call!) rescheduling my appointment for 3 weeks out. I wasn?thappy of course, so I called and had to leave a message to confirm the appointment time. I received another call back two days later, again at 8PM confirming the time. I specifically took the day off work so I could be home since this involved interior work as well. On the day of the appointment, I received no call and no one showed up. Ninety minutes after the appointment window, I called the number on my folder once again and went through the same ridiculous process of no record of my appointment/my account/etc. Finally, the man in charge of exterior work called me and said that due to the rain over the weekend (this was a Monday), they were a few days behind so he?d have to reschedule my appointment. I had a few issues with this. First, why was there no call to let me know? And why is someone else?s water issue (due to rain) more important than mine? I did not feel like a valued customer based on the constant rescheduling, the no calls, etc. Apparently, the customer?s time is not as valuable as the company?s. I was also informed that this appointment was only to come look at the issue, not to fix it (even though they?d been to my house before!) So I had to make another TWO appointments - one to review the issue, and another to fix the issue. They were able to come out two days later and schedule the work two weeks after that. Joe was very apologetic and did not charge me for the extra work, which I appreciated based on my experience. Finally, three guys came over yesterday to complete the interior and exterior work. They were extremely unfriendly, did not cover their boots as they went from outside to inside, did not put down runners or anything to protect my floor, and switched off my boiler but did not bother to let me know or turn it back on (I figured it out in the middle of the night as my family froze). Overall, I appreciate that the company tried to make amends for a poor customer experience but I would not recommend this company if you have waterproofing needs.
I can't say enough good things about this company
.From the beginning of the job until the end, the men worked hard to get the job done in a timely manner. They arrived early at the job site and often left late. The improvements they made to my home enhanced it's curb appeal greatly! The workmanship is impeccable.I'm very happy with how the job turned out and how neat they left the site. And the man orchestrating the entire project(The contractor)was polite, organized and professional...returning my calls and addressing all of my concerns and questions. In fact all of the workmen were professional and polite. My experience with this company is 5 star. I would highly recommend them to friends and family. Thanks again SAS!"Thank you very much for your review of our work! We greatly value our customers and love to hear that you were very pleased with the work we performed on your home!"
We were thoroughly impressed with the crew that was sent to work on our walls. They were extremely courteous, professional and it was obvious that the men took pride in their work. They left the work site clean at the end of the project and were more than happy to answer any questions that I had during the process.
I can't say enough about our experience with SAS Services and will use them again, if the need arises, and will most certainly recommend them to our family and friends.
"Thank you for your kind words, [remove member name]. We are happy to hear that the level of service you received was on par with our expectations. We are grateful for your business!"
Once the excavation started, I was pleasantly surprised at how tidy the workers kept the outside of the house, despite being forewarned that it would be a (very) messy job. As we were told prior to agreeing to the service, the landscaping on the side of my house needed to be fixed, but nothing that couldn't be fixed once the work was completed and I was very happy that it wasn't a surprise. Throughout the entire process the workers were extremely cognisant of making sure everything was as clean-looking as possible and once the work was done I was extremely pleased that they left the outside of our home extremely clean.
I would recommend SAS Services to anyone looking to hire a professional, courteous and competitively-priced waterproofing company. Our experience was nothing less than wonderful!
"Thank you for your comments regarding the excavation work that was recently done on your home. We are very pleased that your experience was wonderful and we are thankful for your business!"
