.Apex Concrete was subcontracted by our general contractor to excavate the dirt beneath an established pole barn extension to our garage in order to give it a proper foundation for a wood working shop.  I primarily worked with Brian Miller, owner of Apex Construction, and his foreman Roy Miller.  One or both were on hand at all times, supervising as well as doing the actual work.  They used a mini cat to dig out the main area, and dug the footers under the walls by hand (in very rocky soil, I might add).  They poured a 15+ by 20+ foot long pad in-situ, having to level the concrete in the longest direction from the garage door opening of the room.  The far end had some bumps and lumps from having to scrape and level over a long distance, but Brian came back later and ground those down for us.
As a side note, some of these guys considered themselves to be a bit "rough" around the edges, but they were unfailingly courteous and polite to me (as a lady) in every matter that counted, and then some.  It's been a long time since I've had someone apologize for using bad language in my presence.  (The person in question hadn't realized I was standing behind him, and was very apologetic, much to my surprise.)  Furthermore, I'd asked the men to leave the excavated dirt in a pile by the garage so that I could use it to shore up a crumbling hillside retaining wall on the edge of our property.  When Brian realized that I had been shoveling the dirt by hand, he had his men come over and do the job for me.  They made short work of it.  He didn't ask for any additional payment, either.  He just saw a woman doing a hard physical job herself and chose to be gentlemanly and help.
Lastly, I showed Brian a foundation issue I have with the house.  We have a 100+ year old house, and discovered that one room did not have a proper foundation until long after we'd purchased the house (long story).  I'd been quoted around $15k to install a proper foundation under this room by other contractors.  I showed it to Brian, and he volunteered a much less expensive option, underpinning the room with ~4' of concrete rather than digging all the way down to match the basement foundation in the newer part of the house.  I certainly don't NEED a full foundation there, and I didn't know enough about foundations to know that this was an acceptable alternative.  When I have the money, I intend to have Apex come back out, and do that job for me as well.
In conclusion, I plan to use Apex Concrete Services again in the future, and I would definitely recommend them to anyone else.
