In the fall, October of 2013, I went to start the furnace. It wouldn't run again. I called Team Bob's and it appeared the core was bad. No diagnostics were performed and the furnace was only about 5 years old, still under warranty. They recommended I purchase a new furnace and following up on the warranty would be useless. It was amazing how fast they got a salesman out to the house even though I was less than convinced that I needed a new furnace and could just ignore the warranty that was still in place on the old furnace.
They quoted me an outrageous price for a replacement.
I ended up going with another company and they DID get part of the new furnace paid for by the warranty on the old furnace. Also, they performed some diagnostics that Team Bobs did not. I did end up with a new furnace, but it was MUCH less given that they worked with the manufacturer on the warranty. The company I had come in thought the problem started when Team Bobs put the incorrect condensation pump on the old furnace and water backed up into the furnace. Given that I hadn't had any problems prior to that, I would tend to agree.
I will not use them in the future for any work and mentioned this situation to the city inspector when he came out for the final inspection.
"We are sorry to hear our mutual client, [Member Name Removed], had a difficult experience in 2012. We have attempted to reach him, however, the contact information we have for him in 2012 is no longer valid. We sent a letter to the customer explaining our concerns and apologizing for the perceived service he received over three years ago. At this time, I would like to clear up inaccurate details that were expressed in his description of the work completed as there are discrepancies in dates, times and the actual work performed. The customer called us at 9:45am on Friday, April 6, 2012 and said he had recently purchased the home and he knows the furnace has not had maintenance since 2009. He said the fan sounded like it wants to kick on, but it wouldn’t. He reset the breaker to see if that would get it going, and it did not. Our technician arrived to their home at 3pm on April 6, 2012. Our technician found the condensate pump was bad and the filter plugged. He replaced the condensate pump and the filter and also did a clean and check on the humidifier. The total cost of this invoice was $431. The customer called the answering service on Saturday, April 7, 2012, and said they again had no heat. Our on-call technician arrived to their home to find the condensate pump bad; the float switch did not activate every time. He replaced the faulty condensate pump and this was all at no charge to the customer. Following this, we did not hear from Mr. McGonagall until Saturday, September 29, 2012. He called after hours and said the burner would not come on. The customer told the on-call technician he cleared the condensate pump himself and was getting an error code #33 and after 15 minutes would go into error code #13. The on-call technician arrived at the home to find the flame roll out had popped. The technician found the secondary heat exchanger plugged. The technician recommended either replacing the heat exchanger or the furnace due to the cost of the repair and the age of the furnace. We would also like to clarify that this furnace was manufactured the fifth week of 2001 and was outside the manufacturer’s 5 year parts warranty. We are pleased that [Member Name Removed] was able to work with the manufacturer to receive a new unit under warranty. We welcome the opportunity to discuss this with Mr. McGonagall."
