Upon inspection of the vehicle, they called to advise me that one of the cam shaft lobes had excessive wear. I advised them that I wanted to talk to them before they were to proceed with any work. Upon entering the shop they questioned if I put a ZDDP additive in the oil and questioned the quality of the Pennsoil product from the oil change late last year. I advised them that prior to the oil change last fall, the "breakin oil" was the oil they put in the vehicle along with the ZDDP additive they used. I drove approx 1000 miles after the engine rebuild with the break in oil ( they put in) and less than 100 miles after the oil change. I did add a ZDDP oil additive at time of oil change although they questioned the quality of the product ( major name brand). Upon reviewing the vehicle, they advised me that I had abnormal wear on #6 cylinder and it required a new cam. They also proposed that based on the limited driving of the vehicle, I should consider installing at new cam with hydraulic rollers to eliminate the sensitivity to oils and potential breakin issues. They advised me that I let the vehicle sit for extended periods of time and it should have been started and moved once a week to get proper breakin. My frustration is the vehicle is a classic 65 Mustang which is not a daily driver and would not typically be driven like this year round especially considering the winter climate in Northern Michigan I advised the shop mechanic and manager that 4 years ago I spent more than $8000 having them completely tear down and rebuild the engine and after around 1000 hours I do not expect to have significant repairs to the engine like they are indicating. I expect the engine to work properly as completed and expected them to complete any required repairs. ( also spent an additional $4000 in rear end and transmission repairs during the same time period). I also advised them that if they would not correct vehicle I would take it elsewhere. They said they would review it with the owner and get back to me. They called back and advised me that there was nothing they could do since it was so long ago and I requested they put the valve covers back on the car and let me know when it was available for pickup. They did reduce the repair hours a couple hours. Upon review of this issue with other mechanics, they advised me that the cam failure could have occurred at initial breakin at the shop or could have occurred after starting the vehicle after extended periods of inactivity. Very difficult to determine root cause of failure but to not accept any accountability into addressing the issue or tearing into the vehicle to determine potential failure is poor business practice from my perspective. To propose a " more robust" repair after I just had significant engine work completed by them was out of the question. I have taken the vehicle to another shop and will have the analysis of failure and repairs completed by them.
