But since people don't like to read through such a long explanation, here is it in a nutshell just multiply this by 3 on the negative experience.
- has no project planning skills (took him double the estimated time of 5-6 days for two rooms and a bathroom!!!).
- blamed other contractor (the contractor who referred him to me) and me for him taking so long
- does not care about timing
- does not care about customer (only works on his schedule!!!)
- is getting very! defensive when ask to leave at a decent time (7-8 pm) while he says he is used to the homeowners letting him stay and work as long and at whatever time of day he sees fit.
- stayed at times past 9 pm because he would never show up until late afternoon. He told me that his time does not revolve around me and I am not the only project he has doing
- He was rude, insensitive, got aggressive when I questioned him, started raising his voice with my daughter in the other room
- very unprofessional
He said he would be at my house by 8 am the first day he was supposed to start. He didn't show up until around11:15. He left again 1/2 hour later to get supplies, came back around 1 pm and left for the day at 2:30. This raised a red flag and I started recording his coming and going. (I worked from home those two weeks and he could have come any time during the day).
That was just the beginning of the what seemed like a never ending nightmare.
When I questioned him about his work hours, he said he never meant really 5-6 days and that the first day didn't count and that the estimate didn't include drying time. Really????? An estimate is start to finish time!!!!
He also told me I should have done my research better, he wanted me to check if the walls were dry enough for him to come back and continue since he didn't want to make that extra trip, that I could have done more to make everything dry faster.... and on and on and on....
Before day 10, I told him if he is not done by the end of day 10, he can not return. Well, he wasn't done and he stayed past 10 pm that day!!!
When he left, he left behind all his trash as well (soda cups, bottles, just to mention a few things).
This has been the worst experience with a contractor that I have ever had anywhere!!!
I hope other people don't have to go through this despite what his defense might be since I believe he will blame everyone and the world before himself.
My biggest mistake was to not have fired him after day 3. That was my mistake and I take blame for that.
And then on top of all of that, he was a great guy. My boys (6yrs and 3yrs) now feel like he is part of our family and include his name when they talk about the family. I don't know, all in all I just have to say that I couldn't be happier with the work he did for us and it was all at a really great price. It's not often, I don't think, that you actually come away from an experience with painters, mechanics, car salesman, etc feeling like YOU got the better of the deal, but to sum up, that's exactly how I feel about my dealings with Joey LaDean's Painting and Drywall. I can't emphasize how strongly I would recommend his work to anyone!
