Terrible. Price was quoted and I mentioned I had used orange glo on them. He said he would have to use a special cleaner and that would be about $100 more. We agreed on this. About 2 weeks after the floors were done, they started peeling in different places. had difficult time getting in touch with him. Then after another call he came back with another man. This guy scratched a couple of places with sandpaper and reapplied varnish. I could tell this was not going to do it. The peeling was still there after this being done. The peeling was all around most of the baseboards. He said this was because of the orange glo. But we paid extra for the additional cleaning to clean the floor of the orange glo. I called later about this and never got a response. I then gave up because I knew that it would worthless to pursue this. I should have sued him. He was a complete jerk named Rocky Genoa. Terrible experience. I still see he is advertising his fabulous floors in a local book with coupons and deals in it. This was in the one dated today 3-19-2016.
On the first attempt the finish the floor the polyurethane began peeling. I also found 2 staples in the floor sticking up 1/4 inch near the edge of the floor and began to wonder how the company was able to properly sand and lay material without noticing them.
The fabulous floors (FF) came back on the second attempt in order to fix the issue but only did spot treatments. The spots treated were not smooth and could be easily seen. There was also a bit more peeling after this visit. I also found a few drips of polyurethane that were mounds 1/8" high.
On the third attempt FF came back again to fix the peeling and rough spots and the drips. This time they wanted to sand and recoat the entire floor. After completion they somehow missed one of the drips in the middle of the floor. There was also more rough spots noticeable. I also found hair and dust under the layers of poly.
On the fourth attempt they came back and sanded the rough spots and laid down a thicker coat of poly. The also tried some chemical wash of some kind. The workers sanded a spot down too far and removed the stain of a spot on the stained floor. There was also more rough spots than the previous coats.
The floor is still in this state and I am unable to reach the company for resolution. I have left 3 or 4 voicemail and text messages over the last week and a half but I have not received a call back. I try calling once a day with no success. The main office at fabulous floors could not help either because they said each franchise is locally managed.
In my opinion this outfit lacks professionalism. The workers seem to rush through their work and have little regard for quality. On the second visit I was told that the workers only did spot treatments because the "lady" would not let the men bring in their equipment which was a fabricated story. On another occasion the worker showed me a piece of flooring they just coated with poly less than 30 seconds earlier and said "look no more peeling", which is troubling since it is impossible to see peeling until the product dries. And finally they seem to screen calls and avoid customers. I am still trying to get a hold of the company after more than a week with no success.
I am hoping to get this resolved by either getting the floor repaired properly or getting my money back. I paid for a finished floor without peeling or noticeable rough spots or trapped dust and hair under the layers.
Update:
FF called me back and came out for another attempt. Coarser sand paper was used and a chemical cleaning. The result was not good at all. The floor now has almost 30% peeling areas. They suggested that the wood floor could have contamination. I am not sure what to believe but it is encouraging that they are trying again. They plan to get back to me with a recommended solution which may be a more durable polyurethane product (I am questioning the durability of the current poly) or a full sanding down to the wood. I will update my ratings as things progress.
Update (6/19/2014):
2 months later and still not resolved. I have been calling and leaving messages with the owner and workers. I was able to contact one of the workers several times and each time he said he would call me right back after he talked to the owner but I got no call back. My guess is that on most of the call attempts they were screening my calls. I would have hoped that FF would just tell me their intentions (good or bad for me) instead of screening my calls and trying to ignore my calls altogether. I ended up reaching the owner after calling from a different phone number. The owner said that they can do a full sand of my floor to fix any issues. I am reluctant to continue with this company at this point due to their poor customer service but I would like to get this fixed without spending more money. I will update these details as things progress further.
I purchased a deal on Angie's List for this service and found while scheduling the appointment that the service only included one coat of polyurethane. Therefore, it was necessary to purchase a second coat. The additional price was unexpected but reasonable.
They showed up when they were scheduled and were in and out of my house within 2-3 hours both times. There seemed to be a lot of confusion regarding the date of the second appointment due to a computer crash and resulted in 2-3 different phone calls to get it straightened out. Regardless of this, they did show up when expected.
They were professional and courteous in their dealings. One of the gentlemen had a tattoo of a naked woman exposed on his forearm. That did not impact the quality of work performed or the manner in which he spoke to and dealt with me. I just would have preferred to not see it.
If your floors are worn but in good shape, I would recommend this company and the process they use.
Also, I had to suggest to the technician that after the sanding was done and he vacuumed the floor there was still a light dust on the floor. He was going to put the sealer right over the light dust until I suggest that he wipe it down to remove this dust. He did this without a problem or argument. But if I didn't ask him to do this, he would have just put the sealer right over the dust.
Overall they did a great job and the floor looks great. Unfortunately, the cost was significantly higher than advertised and I had to supervise the work.
Curtis visited my home about a week before the installation and provided INCREDIBLE feedback. I was first going to go with an engineered floor. Instead, Curtis directed me towards the solid hardwood and made a very clear point that they do no cut corners on quality install. He knew how a floor is supposed to look when it is installed correctly and gave me a plethora of suggestions that changed my entire mindset of what I wanted (thankfully I still had not purchased the hardwood). After his visit I went to Lumber Liquidators and bought the best 5" solid wood that they had (no underlayment required with this type of install because it is glued and nailed to the sub-floor).
Curtis' crew exceeded my expectations.
