American Outbuildings

About us

American Outbuildings has been custom building quality storage sheds and accessory buildings since 2001. Prior to this, we had installed “kit sheds” from the big box stores for several years. Seeing a need for a more affordable while at the same time, better constructed shed, we went to work designing a line a sheds without the flaws and corner cutting we had seen in the past. These designs combined with our experience and low overhead resulted in a high quality product with great value. We take pride in our work and appreciate our customer’s referrals and repeat business, so we work hard to exceed your expectations.

this guy is a joke, The only reason I am giving this guy a 1 star is because there was not a lesser score to give. I reached out to Devon American Outbuildings for a quote on moving a shed that was built by his company few years ago. First he didn't the phone and texted that he will give me a call and because I left him a message and sent him an email he was annoyed that that I called him twice. He continued to say, you contacted me various ways and hung up on me. very rude and not professional at all. by the way the shed that they built is very poor quality as well so don't waste your money the only reason I called them to move the shed is because they did the original work.
Response from American Outbuildings
"This person called and asked if we could move his shed. We do not offer that but I asked him to send a pic of the shed to see if I could help. He sent a pic with the message “DO NOT FORGET ABOUT ME!” (In all caps). The shed was too large and had no floor or foundation so I messaged back that we could not help. We have never done business with this person."

I met with Devin in late January 2020 to discuss the construction of a new shed in our back yard. The meeting with Devin went very well and he did a great job listening to my needs and provided a good proposal at a fair price. With COVID-19 and a delay in a major patio project I also had in the works (which needed to be done first - completed late June), Devin came back in early July and built a 6ft - 10ft lean to shed. He and his partner were very efficient, personable and did a great job building the shed to the specs he had drawn up in January. I have been using the shed for nearly 2 months and everything is great and I am happy with the extra storage space. After 2 major downpours, it is completely water tight and the quality of materials and finished product are excellent. I would definitely use Devin's company again.

The project started out with me looking for a quote to build a prefabricated shed that I had seen at Costco online. Via email contact at first, Devon gave me an estimate but strongly suggested building a custom shed that would look the same but would have a much better quality construction, and in comparison, the initial price was a bit lower. We then set up an appointment to discuss the project. Custom-building allowed to go from a size 8x10 to a 10x16, which suited my needs better. The design proposal was very detailed based on my model. I signed up in March and building was scheduled for May. It was completed as weather allowed for both digging for concrete, pouring concrete, drying time, and considering coordination of the same with another job. Communication of work scheduled during that time was very good. The finished shed is very solid construction and as beautiful as envisioned. It looks more like an accessory building than a shed, I am very pleased and recommend American Outbuildings for your storage building needs.

Devon and his crew did great work. Excellent communication. The shed is exactly what we wanted. It was about the same cost as prefab but you can tell it is 1000x better! I couldn't be happier with his work! I would absolutely recommend him to anyone!

Absolutely beautiful work. Even the city inspector was impressed with the quality of the work performed and they never seem to like anything. New roof is much sturdier than the original. Devon was great to work with. His crew cleaned up and swept daily leaving the place as clean and neat as ever. Can't praise them enough for the finished product! Would HIGHLY recommend this company if you need a custom shed or garage built.

In looking to get a new shed built I contacted many companies for quotes and I got nothing but headaches, luckily we finally found American Outbuildings. We had them tear down an old shed and build a new. We had no issues from start to finish. The shed they built looks beautiful and well-constructed and Devon was very responsive to any questions or concerns I had. I highly recommend American Outbuildings.

Fabulous experience! Devon is super professional. He quickly responded to questions and helped us choose a shed model that would best meet our needs. He worked with our build site and came ready with all the materials and tools to errect a sturdy, high quality shed in just seven hours. Devon is organized, exacting (Every cut and level was percise.) friendly and particular about leaving a clean worksite. I would hire Devon again in a heartbeat.

Devon is every bit professional as the reviews stated.  He is very easy to work with, he is no nonsense and gets things done.  He actually started the job earlier then first quoted. We are so pleased to have found Devon. Thank you Devon for a well built and beautiful shed.

I hired Devon after researching pre-built sheds and owner-build shed kits.  Devon was the only choice for constructing the shed we wanted.  Kits and pre-builds will cost nearly as much, but their walls are built with 2x3 or 2x4 on 24 inch centers.  Their roofs have very little or no over hang and you have to pay extra to have windows and doors placed where you want them.  Devon builds his walls rock solid with 2x4's on 16 inch centers like a house.  He built the shed to my specifications, placing the door and windows where I wanted them.  Devon is courteous and professional. He is no nonsense when on the job, so don't expect him to be your buddy.  That's not what you hired him for anyway.   If you want a strong, well built shed, to last you many years, hire him.  If you want something "on the cheap," buy yourself a pre-built or a diy kit and kick yourself later.  One more thing, Devon is in demand because he does it right, so be patient-- it's worth the wait.

We contracted with American Outbuildings for two main reasons.  Devon is licensed as a Residential
Builder in the State of Michigan and he previously worked for the company that
made the shed originally.  He know exactly how the unit was constructed and what would be needed to make the
repairs .
Our shed is about 13 years old.  When first constructed the builder did not use drip edge on the roof and consequently the edges of the roof absorbed water and deteriorated to the point that unless replaced the top plate of the shed wall could be compromised.  In addition the materials which were used  in the fascia trim had  begun to rot.  Devon quoted a reasonable price and his timeline met with our needs. Devon and his crew at the agreed upon time, removed the roofing shingles and  a dormer, removed the deteriorated roof edge , replaced it with new, and removed the rotted fascia trim, and replaced with a rot proof product.    They then installed drip edge and re shingled the roof.  The entire job took them less than three  hours. They hauled away all of the debris and left the site in the same condition as when they arrived.  .   The shed now looks new.

Response from American Outbuildings
"Great to hear you were happy with our work! Just to give you a breakdown on the price since I see we got a "B" grade on a $700 total price: Cost at dump to dispose of old shingles, dormer and trim: $125 New shingles 175 Drip edge and fasteners 30 50 yr preprimed trim 80 Door hinges and lock for door we rehung 35 Plywood to replace rotted roof 10 ------ $455 That leaves $245 for myself and 2 skilled workers to completely tear off a shingled roof and dormer, replace rotted sheathing and drip edge, re shingle roof, remove and replace old trim with new high quality trim, jack up shed and re level, remove both doors and replace hinges, realign door and add new locking handle. Not to mention an hour plus at the lumber yard and a trip to the dump. Those "A" grades sure are tough sometimes,"

"Notice [Member Name Removed] review is 7 months after the job completion date. Perhaps his memory is off. We signed [Member Name Removed] up for a shed two months prior to the build date and explained that we were booked up until then. He understood and our contract had a proposed start date of two months later. In order to stay on schedule, we poured his concrete slab the same day as two others and worked until early evening to get it done. [Member Name Removed] was with us the entire time, happy and joking around. As we finished, his wife arrived home and I jokingly said "oh, you're too late to help, you missed all the fun". I guess she didn't understand the joke and went ballistic, shouting at me saying WE were two months late and she has been waiting on us. Ranting and raving. I excused myself and went to the front of the house to find [Member Name Removed] to explain what happened. He later apologized for his wife and said they had a recent death in the family causing stress. After the concrete had cured we came back to build the shed and built it in the rain, again, to stay on schedule. [Member Name Removed] was very happy with the results and I assume he has had no problems with it as I have not heard otherwise. Why someone would leave a bad review 7 months later, I do not understand. Yes, we had a lot of jobs lined up and our contract clearly had a proposed start date reflecting that."

After a rough start trying to schedule, he got down to work and did not stop until the work met his high quality standards. Would've given him an A+ if not for all the scheduling problems.

Work was completed to my satisfaction and per the price quote.

I did extensive research on "shed" providers and found the full range from prefab to custom. After looking at Tuff Shed and other competitors, we selected American Outbuildings. The work involved removing and 8x8 plastic shed and slab, and pouring a new 10X16 slab. The only problem was the weather that delayed our start. Once we began, I could see how meticulous Devon Reed is and what pride he takes in his work. He was the primary constructor and worked with a helper.

Devon oversaw every aspect and made sure that everything was done correctly. If by chance a cut was wrong, or some joints did not line up, he made sure they did. He actively communicated with both me and my wife throughout the process. His focus on detail, and thinking through everything from the slope of the roof, to the finish on the uderside of the porch resulted in an excellent product. We are thrilled with the outcome and how he was able to bring the building to life from a sketch on a piece of notebook paper.

We would use American Outbuildings again in a second. Devon Reed is exactly what you would hope to find in an individual engaged in this business. Honest, hardworking, and quality focused.

Devon was honest and true to his word. The shed is a well built structure that was as good as I hoped it would be. They showed up on time on busted their rears all day. It took a week longer to start the project than what we talked about, but his crewman got sick one day, and the weather was poor the other days. Devon called each time there was an issue and we mutually agreed to delay the project. He was on time and did everything I could have hoped for. If I were to do this again I would pay a little more and get a thicker pressure treated floor, and a Spring loaded locking bolt for the static door. Don't be afraid to pay a little more for the options he offers, his work is quality and he will give you what you pay for. They cleaned up their mess and were on their way as soon as the job was done to my satisfaction. I watched them work for a while and while they may not be Bob Vila, their work is really pretty darn good. The boards were straight, the nailing was right, the fitment was excellent, even the roofing was really nice. I could probably come up with something to complain about if I thought about it, but for the money I paid, any complaint I might have would have been addressed by paying more (better door lock hardware, paint the shed, air conditioning :) )

Devon Reed, the owner, was wonderful. He came to the house to assess the situation and discuss our options and helped us decide on the best structure for us. He was excellent about responding to phone calls. He was also here when he said he would be here. It took him about an hour to tear down and remove the old structure. He cleaned up the area very nicely. The next day, he came and put up the new structure in about 3-4 hours. It would have been quicker had it not been raining. There was one glitch when he was building and it was due to a neighbor who likes to call ordinance officers for everything. The township does not normally need permits for this type of outbuilding but because I have an unusual yard, there was some issue with it. Anyway, he had to stop construction for the day and get some layout paperwork together for the building department and he had that sent to me ASAP that evening so I could run it up there in the morning. Once they had the paperwork, the building department said that the building had to be 10 feet away from the house and 5 feet away from the fence. I called Devon and he set up a date a few days later to come and move the shed a few inches and finish the job. Well, today he came out and moved the shed to the correct place and when he was here, I mentioned that I hated the lattice fencing that was around our patio and wanted to have it removed. He very kindly took care of that for me! There was also a low voltage wire that was running under ground into the yard. (I think there used to be a pond out there and they left the wiring underground) He helped us cap it up near the house in case we ever hit it when digging in the yard so it will be a dead wire and won't harm us.
What I find most amazing is that he was very honest and trustworthy. We paid half of the money when we requested the job and we paid the other half when the shed was built but the building hadn't been moved yet. I know there are some companies that would have taken advantage of that and dragged their feet about coming back out since there was no more money to be collected but not Devon. He was out here and had everything fixed before the week was out. I highly recommend American Outbuildings if you are looking for honest, dependable, and quality work at a great price!!
