If you're looking for a gleaming shiny 'operating room' kind of place - look somewhere else. Cars and engines are dirty, and so's the floor. But the tools are well kept, the work is impeccable, and they explain what's wrong and/or what they did with as much detail as you ask them to give.
If you're on a tight budget and just trying to keep a junker driveable, tell them: they'll help. If I were to consider buying a used car, I'd bring it right to Ron for a checkup first, and I know I'd get an honest opinion. I treasure these guys - best car shop ever.

My car started making a horrible squeaking noise on my way home from work. I found Ray and Sons on Angie's List. Since they had a good rating and were nearby, I took my car there. They were extremely courteous on the phone. They called me promptly to let me know that the problem was related to the sway bar. They first attempted to find the squeak and oil it. When that didn't work, they called again to see if I wanted to move on to the next step and have the sway bar replaced. By the end of the day, the car was ready. I appreciated the excellent communication and the fact that they did not proceed with the work without confirming that I wanted to do so. I also appreciate the fact that they were able to complete the repair within a few hours on a Saturday! I'm sure that we will be using this Ray and Sons for future auto repairs.

Ray's shop is very good at fixing mechanical problems. It cost a little more for this repair than I expected but my car runs great since he fixed it. They are very thorough and reliable.

I was new to the area and chose Ray and Sons on the recommendation of a neighbor who said they had treated him fairly. I had to have both my cars towed to this garage within one day, and they exceeded my expectations on price and service. I found them to be personal, knowledgeable, and up on the latest technical service bulletins for my Ford Crowne Vic and Dodge Caravan. They showed me the parts and the defect that caused the problem, and even retrofitted a manufacturers defect on alternator belts that tend to fall off when they come in contact with heavy water during a rain storm. They said it was a common problem, and retrofitted it so it would not happen again. I did not ask for this, they recommended it and exceeded my expectations. This shop has been in business for 35 years. They have two locations in Royal Oak, one on Woodward Ave directly across from the Detroit Zoo, and another on E. Lincoln.
