We met with Justin O'Brien, who sat down with us and described the process, and our options, in detail. We would be able to save a lot of money by putting some sweat equity into the demolition of our existing kitchen, and by intelligent selection of the product we'd put into the new one.
:
Justin came out to the house and looked at our existing kitchen. We discussed our ideas for the new layout, and he made a few suggestions that made a lot of sense, that we incorporated into the design. We ended up with more useful counter space, more floor space, and more storage space, than we had had in the older kitchen.
:
We put a lot of sweat into the makeover. We demolished the old kitchen, right down to plaster and 60 year-old subfloor. We rented the dumpster to haul all the old stuff away. We contracted with the plumber, electrician, and flooring guys. This added time to the project schedule, but saved us a lot on contractor fees. Justin provided advice on timing of the various pieces - cabinets before floors, floors before appliances (especially the dishwasher).
:
The installation of the cabinets took only a couple of days, and the work went smoothly. There was a little bit of a glitch with the counter tops - the granite we had selected at Kurtis was no longer in stock at the granite supplier, so we had to pick an alternative pretty quickly. Perhaps Kurtis should have checked with the granite supplier for availability before showing us the granite samples - an arguable point, but not worth quibbling over.
:
Overall, it was a very successful makeover. It took longer than we would have liked, but that's because we put a lot of our own effort into the job to save cost. Kurtis met their promise, and even came in under their initial cost estimate. The entire job cost about $17,000, but that included flooring, paint, drywall compound, dumpster rental, etc. - Kurtis's portion of the cost was much less than that.
:
Not sure I'd want to do as much work on my next renovation, and I'm not sure that Kurtis would be as competitive on an entire makeover job as they were on just the cabinets and countertop, but for what I needed them to do they were terrific.
