he said he now owned his own construction business and would be happy to see what we wanted.
i invited him over were he surveyed the space and listened to our ideas. we agreed on a plan and a price and soon he and his nephew proceeded to mark off and stud in the walls and ceiling joists. after the stud work was completed he called in the plumber who immediately realized that the shower could not be installed against the rear wall and the distance of the tank from the wall was also questionable. he confided in me that he asked Jellens to allow him to see the space before hand but was told it wasn't necessary. consequently an additional 8" had to added to the rear wall to extend it out enough to permit proper installation. following the plumbing installation that went as planned, he and his nephew resumed with the dry walling. the space could have easily been closed off with drop cloths from the rest of the basement but was not, e.g., dust settled on everything which later we had to hand clean.
the single sheet flooring wasn't supposed to be cut to fit but it was and cut poorly.
the trim work was deplorable; corners weren't square, even or matched. the trim around the door was off a full 8th of an inch and instead of cutting new material, the gaps were plugged with painters caulk.
the door wasn't plumb in numerous directions.
the drywall seams were clearly visible.
i spied the contractor walking into the basement with rolls of pink insulation. when confronted, he said his supplier told him that it would suffice as sound proofing. it was then i noticed the entire rear wall had been dry-walled using the existing old pink insulation.
i called around and found four sheets of insulation board which he added to the exterior of the room. we needed 5 so they made do with the same thickness of flake board.
after that i told him not to come back and that i was going to have all of it corrected and that he was going to pay the difference.
several weeks later an attorney recommended i give him the opportunity correct all of the issues.
i called him and arranged to meet where i stated my conditions and settlement terms.
he did the work , sans nephew, and we settled.
a very regrettable experience; a deck builder does not a bath builder make.
