The serviceman arrived promptly and proceeded to check out the issue. Ten minutes later he came back to report that the condensation unit had a dead short and needed to be replaced. It would take 3 to 5 days to get a unit and would cost $2500.
I reminded him that the unit was only 7 years old and asked why it failed so soon. His response: "These things happen
sometime." When I asked what their warranty would cover, he told me to call their office.
I called Rogers' office and asked to speak with the manager. Two days later, he called back to inform me that the unit was out of warranty and they would provide no discount of any kind toward a new unit. When I asked why it failed in only 7 years, I got a identical response of "these things happen sometime." Clearly this is their standard line. When I asked what we needed to do differently so the next unit didn't fail again in 7 years, he replied: You can replace the condensing unit for $2500 or the whole AC unit for $3500 but we will put in a very similar unit.
At this point I became very suspicious of the whole situation and talked to my neighbors to get a recommendation of another HVAC provider (I had not yet joined Angie's List). They recommended Brockway Heating and Air. They came the next day to check out the situation. About 15 minutes later I heard the AC unit kick on and immediately felt cool air coming out of the ducts. In reality all that was wrong with my unit was that an electrical lead had vibrated loose, was arcing, and caused a circuit breaker to kick out. They replaced the leads and charged me $120 for the entire job.
My response was joy and relief for the cost savings. I gave them a major tip for the great job.
I also called Rogers back and informed them what happened and that not only did I not want a replacement AC unit but also that I would never do business with them again. The person on the phone apologized and promised to have the owner of the company call me. You can probably guess what happened next...nothing. No call. No follow up of any kind.
I have no idea if the issue was incompetence or dishonesty, but I would strongly suggest caution when dealing with Rogers.
