Let me tell you a story of why I chose Frabutt Brothers (Troy) to install our new roof.
Some years back, we had water leaking into our living room (from an Ice Dam on our roof). The general consensus from all contractors at that time was that we were under-insulated and under-ventilated. We hired Frabutt Brothers (Troy) and his guys to install some "blown in" insulation, and additional vents. I choose them at that time, because they seemed like straight shooters. Weren't the cheapest bid, wasn't the most expensive. Somewhere in between. I felt like they were recommending enough to get the job done, without trying to sell me a lot of extras.
Fast forward to 2014. We need a new roof. To be honest, I wasn't considering using Frabutt again. I thought I wanted Roofing specialists. People who only did roofs, and since there seemed to be so many other highly rated companies here on Angie's List, I started calling all of them first. I met with 8, that's right people, 8 different roofing companies. I am sure some of them would have done a good job had I hired them. I am sure their roofs would have been more than adequate. But let me tell you why I chose Frabutt Brothers again.
Some contractors tried to make me feel like we needed big changes to the drainage and ventilation systems. I also had someone suggest that we were under-insulated still, and that the "blown-in" insulation had "settled" too much, and he suggested I call who installed it, and have them check it out. So, I did. I called Troy, and told him I was told our insulation was inadequate, and that I wanted him to look at it and see if it was too thin. Troy looked at it, and explained there are different thickness recommendations for insulation based on the region you live in. There is a range of how much insulation is required. While the insulation did settle some, it is still an acceptable level, and clearly better than what we had up there before. And then he asked the question "Well, how's it working for you?" I LOVE THAT! That is the real bottom line right? Do we have problems with water coming in still? NO. Do we think the house feels cold or drafty? No. Are the heating bills crazy expensive? No. Does snow on the roof melt or stay snowy? (If snow is melting on your roof, too much heat is escaping from your house and you are under-insulated).
And as he was talking, I told him: "Now, I remember why I picked you before." He has a very practical approach about the repairs he does. Could I have gotten a more expensive roof? Shingles with a longer warranty? Fancier, more expensive underlayment? Sure. But we live in a modest, little brick ranch with a very simple roof line. If I had a mansion, with all kinds of gables and angles, maybe I would have gone for a more expensive roofing system. But, heck, I doubt we will even still be living in this house 30 years from now. Probably not. And til then, I feel 100% secure that our new roof is going to be just fine, and provide great protection for our little house.
So, as to the actual installation. It was great. Troy and team showed up on time. They installed our new roof on the house (and on the garage) in a single day. And it looks great. I have zero regrets about any of our choices: from the materials used, to the people who installed it, to the price we paid.
I would definitely recommend putting this company in the mix, if you are interviewing people for your new roof!
A+ in my book.
