Blackstone power raked the dead grass (I had killed it all) and removed everything. They then spread 15 yards of dirt and compost over the area and put down grass seed. Its now month later and the lawn looks terrific.
The crew was very professional and hardworking. No issues at all. I'd hire Blackstone again.
The replacement sod used was healthy and green, but now these repaired patches are surrounded by brown, trodden lawn that was injured by the foot and equipment traffic. I called the company and expressed my disappointment in the work performed.
I had agreed to pay them $495.00 for the service, but after seeing how much damage they caused to my lawn I decided to submit only $200.00, stating that if the lawn recuperated by the following spring, I'd be happy to pay the balance.
When I complained to the company's supervisor about the damage, he attempted to convince me that the damaged areas of grass had been ushered into an early dormancy when it was flattened and browned by the heavy foot and equipment traffic.
I was not convinced.
It is now late March, 2014, and the melting snow has revealed last year's damage. I will bide my time and see if these brown and seemingly dead areas will revitalize with the coming growing season. If they do, I'll pay the balance owed. If they do not, I will withhold any further payment until Blackstone returns and addresses the problem. If they will not fix their mistakes, I will not pay.
When the job was performed I expressed my concern about work crews walking on a frozen lawn, knowing that such action could permanently harm the healthy grass. The supervisor claimed that no harm would be done. I was hesitant to allow the work to continue, but deferred to his 'professional' assessment. That was a mistake.
To be fair, Blackstone may indeed return this spring and rectify the situation. This remains to be seen.
"The customer made us aware of a problem in late 2013, only after an unpaid balance was sought by Blackstone. At that time, we agreed to wait until spring to see what would happened to the damaged lawn. As the owner and representative of the company, I gave my word that I would personally be back out to address any remaining issues in early 2014 as soon as the weather allowed. On Tuesday, April 22, 2014, I followed through on my promise to right any wrongs and brought fresh top soil, seed and fertilizer to this customer's property to fix the damaged areas. This remedy was done entirely at his request and I was personally there with 2 other employees to oversee the work. I believe that Blackstone has made this customer whole again and we have kept our promise to make this job 100% right at whatever cost we incurred. As long as he is happy, then we have done our job and by the pat on the back I received as I was walking away, I believe he is satisfied. By the way, I left without a check and am still waiting 7 months after the original work was completed to be paid in full. There's nothing like holding up your end of the bargain and still getting stiffed in the end. I would not choose to do business with this customer in the future and he has indicated likewise."
"We appreciate the posting and look forward to doing business again!"
