A team returned the next morning, with a supervisor who checked out the situation and tried to clear the drain, without success.
They determined that the line exited under the driveway, and recommended that I schedule a service call to dig up that section of the driveway and replace a section of the pipe. Although this job would be thousands of dollars, they seemed so professional and credible that I scheduled the work to be done the following week. The next day, the rains let up and the drain cleared. I called to cancel the job and they removed the charge from my credit card without any problem. Afterward, I spoke with a neighbor who had a similar experience with this business.
Before leaving on the second day, they gave me the results of a home plumbing inspection. As I had not asked for this, I was pleasantly surprised that nearly everything was rated as good. The one exception was the pressure release valve on my gas hot water heater. He told me, while pointing to the valve at the top of my water heater, that I needed to open and close the valve a couple of times each year in order to keep it from sticking.
I followed that advice, and opened the release valve twice using a bucket to catch the water. After closing the valve, I left town for a long weekend. Upon my return, I found water all around the hot water tank from a slow leak due to that valve. When I called my local plumber, they explained that the emergency relief valve should not be opened manually. It is designed to open once, and then does not reseal. The cost to replace the valve was minor ($75). But I was completely shocked that Mr. Rooter would recommend a maintenance practice that is clearly not standard and certain to result in further repairs. Perhaps they thought I would call them back again?
