Mark Anthony, owner of the company, seemed very professional at the first and second meeting. He looked over everything that needed to be done, assured us he could do it, and quoted a price. He had us sign a contract to ensure start and finish date of the project. The job that was originally going to be just eight to ten days long quickly turned into well over thirty days. When they refinished the wood floor there was one area in the dining area that needed to have wood replaced due to some leakage problems in the past. The wood they used on the floor was a different type then the rest of the floor and clearly looks very different then the rest of the floor. He assured us that the wood was the same and that over time it would age to look the same as the rest of the floor. Another company told us this just was not completely true - that the wood is in fact just a different type of wood that could have been stained to look closer to the existing floor. Secondly, Anthony and his father both worked on the floor at the same time and they put the finish on different in different areas of the floor (ie - thicker in the areas that Anthony did and thinner in the areas done by his father). Also, some of the floor came out as a very shiny finish and a more matt finish in other areas. We had blotches of what looked like extra spilled areas, several swirl marks and even shiny and matt finishes half way through one room. It was a mess. They used at least three or four coats of finish to try to correct their mistakes but the damage was done and they could not seem to fix it. The floor was not presentable to anyone let alone ready to put this house on the market as promised. It was a terrible job. This was after a month of trying to fix it. The painting job was good and the job they did on the crown work was excellent but the floor still looked terrible. When we talked to Anthony about it he just said he didn't know what to do - that he quoted us way too low to start with and had put too much time and money into trying to fix it so he was done. We pointed out that the extra money he spent on this job had been due to correcting the mistakes that he made, not our fault but he still said that he had spent too much money on this job so he was done. Then he said, "At least it looked better then before". We were amazed that anyone would just walk away from a job unfinished like this - WE DOCUMENTED EVERYTHING WITH PICTURES (and are happy to show them to anyone interested). He did give my husband a slight discount on the final bill because we complained but basically his comment to us was "guess we shouldn't have done business together." When I asked for a receipt from him showing just the bill and what was paid so we could add it to the receipt paperwork - Since we paid the job in full even though we were not happy, he told us on three different occasions he would leave a receipt at the house and had just forgotten. But when I called him after still not receiving the receipt, he refused to do it without us signing a paper saying we would not sue him. We decided not to give him that and just used the paperwork and our checks to show the estate it was paid in full. His professionalism that he showed in the beginning went out the window at the end. We had to hire another company to come in and fix their mistakes - the other company quickly diagnosed what they had done wrong, refinished the floor and had it done for us in a matter of one day. Since then, the areas that this company did and we did not have repaired by another company, have actually started to chip off. Shabby workmanship with a poor attitude. I would NEVER recommend this company to work on any type of wood flooring - they are clearly not a company that will stand behind their work!
Response from Happy Homes
"When I first met clients and looked at floor, it was destroyed by water. The wood had been stained dark black by water, and the boards had all warped-there was NO WAY the house would sell with the floors like that. They asked me what to do, and I advised them that the floors are 100 years old-even the same wood will not be aged like this wood, it will look different no matter what we did, you will be able to see the new wood. What we could do to get the CLOSEST MATCH POSSIBLE was sand the existing floors down to bare wood, re-stain all the floors, and apply the poly over that. I gave them a price to do that, and they said there wasn't enough money in the trust to pay for that, was there ANY way to get the floors into better shape WITHOUT SPENDING ALL THAT MONEY? I said that I would replace the black wood, stain to match the best I could, do a light pad sand over the rest of the floors, and apply the poly to all the floors. I told them I didn't recommend this practice, because it is simply not the right way to do it, but they seemed to understand that this was a way to make the FLOORS LOOK BETTER THAN THEY DID, and said lets do it. So I did. When I was done, and the result was EXACTLY what I told them it would be, they expressed their concern, and said that ALL my other work looked beautiful, but the floors did not look as good as they were hoping. I told them "you wanted the floors to look better, and they do- but I cant make them look brand new on the budget you gave me, so I am done." Even though the floors turned out just how I told them they would, and even though the clients wanted me to do a STEAK JOB ON A HOT DOG BUDGET, I still gave them a 50% discount on the job, meaning after I paid for all of my LABOR AND MATERIALS, I DID THE ENTIRE JOB FOR FREE!! And somehow, the clients are STILL trying to wring me for the job cost by putting my name out there badly, and to me that is simply wrong to do-I gave them a fair job at a discounted price, and when they didn't like it, I gave them another huge discount at my expense!!"
