First it is important to note that the current address for Gustafson Floors is PO Box 346, Portland, MI 48875. The phone number is 517-346-9663; email: [email protected]; Fax: 517-644-1869. The information available on Angie's list was incorrect which provided us with some difficulty making the initial contact.
We contacted five vendors to visit our home and provide an estimate for the work to be done. Three companies responded with quotations, one visited but did not submit a quotation, one did not respond.
Gustafson was responsive and very professional when the visit occurred. Although the price was about 15% greater than the next bid I was impressed by the individuals who did the work. The interlacing of old and new flooring took longer than expected but that didn't bother us because Greg was very deliberate and cautious in his work. Unless an observer knew flooring was added it would be difficult for the non-professional to know additional flooring had been added.
When the sanding began I was amazed that there was minimal dust. By that I mean "hardly noticeable." The high-powered vacuum system connected directly to the sander removes nearly all dust immediately. There was no need to drape doorways or cover furniture, the system is that clean. I didn't believe it until I witnessed it.
Both workers were delightful, professional and willing to allow me to observe them at work. I recommend Gustafson Floors and would hire them in the future.

Job went well nice. I was pleased with his attitude. He worked with our design ideas to get us the floor we wanted. He was helpful with his ideas on things we could do. He was on time.

They did a beautiful job. 2 things I was disappointed in . . . the sales person never told me I could have had heat vents in the floors that were flush. I found out later they would have been a little more, but I would have gladly paid the extra. The ones we have are the same material as the floors, but they sit on top of the floor. Also, we told the installers we were not replacing our vinyl flooring in the kitchen and hallway, they were not careful and dripped sealer in several places on the vinyl. They never responeded to calls to come back and fix the problem. Those spots have now yellowed and are very obvious.
This company is no longer located on Cedar in Mason. I'm not sure where they are located now.
We did a number of different remodeling projects at the same time. Sorry, I don't remember the exact amount spent.

I contact Gustafson's to refinish the fir floors in my 1920's house. I was attracted to the company because they offer the dustless sanding system. In a dustless system, all the equipment is directly connected to a large vaccum which sits outside of the house. There is absolutely no dust with this system! It's awesome!! After contacting Gustafson's, we received a visit from Chandler (one of their technicians) for the estimate. We explained that we wanted the entire second floor, including the stairs (treads and risers), completely sanded to bare wood and refinished. In all, 3 rooms w/closets, the hallway and the stairwell for approximately 600 square feet. He quoted us $3100 for the work. Of the total cost, nearly half was for the stairway. (Stairways are done completely by hand. And by hand, I don't mean with power standers. Most of the work on the stairs is done with a traditional scraper, where one pulls the scraper across the wood, slowly removing layers of wood. Very labor intensive!) I accepted the estimate on the spot and schedule the work for two weeks later. Chandler did not require any money down at that time. But, we would need to provide 50% on the first day of the job and the remaining balance on the final day. Chandler arrived promptly at 9 am on each day. The first three days were spent sanding the floors down to bare wood. In fact, he spent an entire day hand scraping and sanding the stairwell. During day 3, he ran a test plot for me to view the different stains. At the end of the day, he had the stain down. The next day, he returned to the apply the sealer. And, on the final day, he returned twice to apply the water-based polyurethane (2 coats, 4 hrs apart). Our floors look beautiful! Chandler did an amazing job. Once you see him work, particular on stairs, you will have a great appreciation for difficulty of refinishing wood floors. We were so impressed, that we scheduled another job. He is currently finishing up our dining room, which cost $540. A much easier job than upstairs. We only have one more room (the living room) and we will certainly call Gustafson's! In all, I can't say enough good things about Gustafson's. Yes, the price is higher than other wood floor refinishers who rely on the traditional sander with the attached bag. But let me tell you - not having to deal with the dust is worth the extra cost! In 2003, I refinished my living room with another contractor and was cleaning up wood dust from the walls and ceiling 3 months after the job was done. My experience with Gustafson's was so much better! Pay the premium for the dustless system - you will not regret it!

Excellent. Very responsive from first contact to last contact. Worker that came out to our house was very thorough, hard-working, timely, and did excellent work. Pulled out all the disgusting old carpeting, all the tacks, and then refinished all the floors. Can't say enough good things about them. Quality work. Price was higher than some of the others (but not all), but it is definitely worth it. Friends had cheaper competitor come out and were not happy with them. Other friends had Gustafson come out and were very happy with them--that's why we chose them. Very happy we did. Highly recommended.

Very well. They arrived when they said they would, did a meticulous job and were great to work with from start to finish. I would work with them again no problem.
