Basement Waterproofing, General Remodeling

Work began on schedule the first day with 1 crew member digging around the perimeter of the house.  As the days went on, different crew members were showing up for the job.  Most of them had little to no experience with this type of Work.  Mike Chirri, the owner, indicated that he was having difficulty getting a crew to stick around.  Mike would show up from time to time to make sure the work was progressing.  As the job was progressing, I was observing the quality of work.  The crew did a good job with the excavation, application of tar, plastic and plastic drainage board.  I thought they skimped out with the amount of pea gravel that was added.  I also thought they did a decent job installing with the 4" drain tile.  That was until about 3 years later.
Over a June weekend in 2010, we experienced a very heavy rainfall over night.  I woke up to the lower level of my house being flooded yet again.  This after we already gutted our kitchen once and redid everything.  We waited a year after the Desert Dry work to redo our kitchen.  We wanted to ensure we were not going to have any more issues before we started our remodel.  After the clean up of the 2nd flooding, I brought in plumbers and landscape architects to find out why this happened again.  We excavated the yard to find out how Desert Dry terminated the 4" drain tiles they laid around the foundation of the house.  We discovered that Desert Dy terminated the drain tiles from both sides of the house into a small pit they dug in the yard.  The pit was roughly a 2 ft by 2 ft square and not very deep.  The pit was filled with some pea gravel and then fill dirt was placed on top.  The issues were that the soil in the yard is clay.  After the pit filled with water, there was no place for the water to escape to.  Desert Dry did not add any sort of overflow cover or outlet to let the water escape.  The clay held the water in, the drain tiles filled with water, the water pressure began to build up around the foundation and, when the pressure was high enough, the water worked its way through the seam where the foundation wall meets the floor.
Once I discovered the root cause of the flooding, I called Mike Chirri to discuss the situation with him.  After all, I had a 35 year warranty on the original work.  Mike indicated that he was willing to help with reimbursing me for the cost of the 2nd flooding.  He asked that I write a letter outlining what happened and send it to him.  I sent the letter and Mike indicated that he received it.  He asked for a few days to review the letter and see what he could do.  Time goes on and I don't hear anything from Mike. My repeated calls to him go unanswered.  I finally get him on the phone a month or so later.  Once he found out who I was, he simply hung up.  Needless to say, I never heard from Mike or Desert Dry again and of course, they did not stand behind the warranty of the work they did.
If anyone is ever looking to hire a waterproofing company, do yourself a favor and hire one that comes highly recommended by Angie's List members.  Remember, you get what you pay.  And trust me, you do not want to have to live/deal with the type of issue more than once.
