After 3 business days, and apparently, based only on the fact that I told them the oil pressure alarm had gone off, UFC told me the problem was either a bad oil pump or a blown engine and gave an estimate ranging from $2400 - 6500. Based on that, we determined the car (a 2007 VW Passat) was not worth repairing. I had it towed to my house in order to avoid the storage fees others have reported. After about a week, I put the key in the ignition (on a whim) and the car started right up! I drove it to the local auto parts store, had them hook it up to the diagnostic tool, and it turns out, two ignition coils had failed. I replaced those by myself about three weeks ago (total cost around $50), and the car has run dependably ever since. To think, I almost called the salvage yard!

This was a major repair, and they did an excellent job as usual, and bent over backwards to get my car back to me as soon as they could, including working late one evening. In matters of discrecenary repairs I have found them to be honest and straight with me, treating me like a family member. I trust them without question from many years of experience with them.

They used to have excellent mechanics. They aren't cheap, and I have found that most of things I have had repaired by them, I had to repair AGAIN within 2 years/15,000 miles--at an actual DEALERSHIP. I don't know if it is just bad quality parts, but, considering how much I have spent there in the past 3 years, I vowed to never take my car there ever again.

This work was done promptly and done well. They did everything that the scheduled maintenance book suggested and at a cost far less than the dealership. In addition they gave me an estimate regarding what the next checkup would cost, because the work involved was more substantial given that the car was going to turn over 100,000 miles. I would definitely use them again.

Their price is reasonable They're great because not only they're highly confident but I often time sit at the desk and talk to the owner or staff and the owner will come out and he'll just carry on the longest conversation talking to me about maintenance on your car and any questions you have. He's really excellent.

They did exactly what I expected of a safety check--checked tires, brakes, suspension, etc. A few things needed replacement--I can't remember exactly what--but basically they found my car in good shape. This would have been a perfect opportunity for them to find numerous problems (my car has 100,00 plus miles) to jack up the price, but they didn't. They also finished the work on schedule and explained clearly what they had repaired and why. My wife and I have been taking our cars to them for years and never have we been disappointed with their service or felt 'taken.and quot;

I take my SAAB convertible and Volkswagon Passat to University Foreign Car Repair for almost all service and repairs unless the work has to be performed by a dealer. I find the employees and owner to be honest, informative and prompt. My only complaint is that they do not have their car repair records computerized so they do not have a record of work previous done when I bring my cars back for work. Everything is hard copy. So, I guess that they are still old fashioned in that regard. Because I have used both dealers and University Foreign Car, it's been my experienced that University Foreign Car Repair is less expensive. They are also willing to tell me if I should take my car to the dealership for work when the part might be less expensive. How often does an auto service shop refer you to the dealer and not keep the business?

It went very well overall. They performed the service the same day, as they usually do, unless they must order parts.

They've been our mechanics for 15 years. They are amazingly good. What I like is that they are specialized in foreign cars particularly Toyotas. We have a Toyota Corolla and a Camry. They are absolutely trustworthy. They tell us like it is and they say that we don't need this and we do need this. Over the years we just count to be able to trust them completely. We just do whatever they say. They've never let us to stray. Their workmanship is top quality. When I've gone to other places for other things and they'll ask who did the work and when I say University Foreign Cars, they'll say that it's really good work. The other thing is that when my wife goes in there she doesn't feel like she's being taken advantage of. They are really good to her. They are just topnotch all the way around. I've only gone to them for the last 15 years and don't know about the price, but it seems reasonable. It's been 4 cars for us now. We keep our cars for a long time, a good 234000 miles and it runs amazingly good. They keep doing all the work on them.

They took it in for a couple of days. It turned out that all it needed was a fuse, a kind of difficult one to find. It was less expensive. We were very happy with them. They were also talking about some of the higher end electronics that were going to be needed. But in the end they fixed it for much less. We would be happy to use them again. We have used them before but it has been quite a while. We mostly talked to the counter person and he was very patient and willing to work with us.

We called for an appointment the day before we brought our Miata in for repair. When we took the car out of storage it was blowing the main fuse. University Forein Car ran a diagnostic on it and found a short; which they repaired. We needed a new battery which we asked them to replace and then had them perform an oil change and drain and replace the break fluid. We dropped the car off at 7:30 a.m and picked it up the next day. They were very helpful and communicated with us throughout the day as they found the problems. Our car now runs perfectly and we are looking foraward to a great top down summer. We have used them for service since 1996 when we bought a Honda Civic that had an engine reving problem. They quoted us 2 hours labor to figure the problem but found the problem quickly and the total bill when we picked it up was $35.00 for a stuck valve cover. Extremely honest company.

I've only been in Lansing for a week, and I was hoping to find a good mechanic for my 72 VW Bug. When I got to University, I was greeted cordially. The gentleman there, who spoke with me, is either the owner or manager. He talked to me for a few minutes about Bugs and demonstrated his expertise by what he had to say. In addition, we both looked at the car together. He was very concerned with making sure that I got the right kind of service for my older car, and was adamant about the quality of the parts and work that they do there. They finished the work within 24 hours, as requested. From my experience, they were knowledgeable, patient, and efficient. I will be taking my car back.

I brought the car in at 8 AM; at 1:30 PM I received a call telling me what they had done, which was within the $85.00 up front charge I'd already approved. They removed all the codes causing the service soon light to go on, then drove the car to see if the light came back on. It didn't so they assumed the codes had been accidentally tripped and decided not to begin an expensive investigation. They said if the service soon light came on again, to bring it back and they would investigate. They also examined the motor mounts and found them solid, which another independent car repair shop had also found. This was contrary to what the Saturn dealer in Okemos told me--they were pushing me to get them replaced! Finally, the bolted my loose front bumper and referred me to a bumper shop if I wanted more work done that would largely be cosmetic. They certainly had the chance to run up my bill by immediately investigating the code problem and replacing my motor mounts, but they didn't. Anytime a person can walk away from a car repair shop with an $85 bill is a day to be happy and a reason to go back. I will.

I dropped the car off at 8 in the morning and had to have it back by 3pm. When I called at 2pm they still hadn't looked at it. When I came to pick up the car, they wanted to charge me $90 for it. When I questioned the charge, the owner became physically aggressive. I decided to pay the fee and never returned.
Response from University Foreign Car Repair
"THE PROCESS FOR EVERY CUSTOMER THAT BRINGS THEIR VEHICLE TO UNIVERSITY FOREIGN CAR IS A WORK ORDER IS FILLED OUT WITH THE NOTES FROM WHAT THE CUSTOMER TELLS US THE VEHICLE IS DOING OR NOT DOING. THE CUSTOMER SIGNS THE WORK ORDER AND IS GIVEN A COPY, THEREBY AGREEING TO THE ESTIMATED CHARGE FOR THE PROPOSED WORK TO BE DONE. THE STANDARD CHARGE FOR THE TIME TO CHECK OUT A VEHICLE AND DETERMINE WHAT REPAIRS NEED TO BE DONE IS THE $90. IF THE RECOMMENDED WORK IS THEN DONE BY UFC, THEN THAT $90 IS RE-APPLIED TOWARD THAT BILL. IF A CUSTOMER TAKES THAT INFORMATION THAT WE HAVE GIVEN TO HIM AND HAS THE WORK DONE ELSEWHERE THE $90 CHARGE WILL OF COURSE STAND. IF YOU GO TO A DOCTOR FOR A CHECK UP, DON'T YOU PAY THE FEE IF YOU ARE SICK OR NOT? OR IF YOU DECIDE TO GET A SECOND OPINION. YOU STILL HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR THE TIME AND WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE FOR YOUR BENEFIT. AS TO TIME. ALMOST ALL OF THE VEHICLES THAT COME IN FOR REPAIR FOR EACH DAY ARRIVE AT ABOUT 8 AM. WE CERTAINLY TRY TO MEET EACH CUSTOMERS NEEDS AS TO WHEN THEY NEED THEIR VEHICLE RETURNED. AND TRY TO SCHEDULE THE DAYS WORK AROUND THEIR NEEDS. OBVIOUSLY NOT EVERYONE CAN BE THE FIRST IN AND FIRST OUT. BUT OUR POLICY IS TO ACCOMMODATE EACH CUSTOMER AS FULLY AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE."
