The customer waiting area is a little cluttered and was smoky and loud so I spent most of the time outside.
But overall I will be back.
I was very happy with my experience and will be recommending all my friends and relatives to them. It is hard to find a shop you can trust, and being a lady it is nice that they take the time to explain things to me in terms I can understand, and Maria the co-manager was great at working around my schedule and even is going to give me a ride to work and pick me up the day I come back for my brakes.
They get an A+++++
I brought my car in early (7am) so that I could beat the rush. The staff were friendly. They did a quick inspection and told me that there was $1400 work needed on my very well maintained car. Included in this figure was new brakes, front and back. The service manager said that there was only 20% remaining on the brake pads; with 60,000 miles driven, this implied that there should be another 15,000 miles of wear on the brakes (we were experiencing no problems with the brakes), so I said let the brakes wait and approved the remaining work. I was told it would take 4-5 hours to get work done and they offered me a drive. I went to the nearby library to work and came back ~4 hours later, only to be told that it wasn't done. After another hours wait, I was told that a part was missing and that the car wouldn't be done until the following afternoon. I was offered a loaner car which I took to get home.
Like a lot of car owners, I don't know much about car repair, and felt like some of the service items recommended (e.g., new timing belt, brakes, new spark plug wires) might have been unnecessary. So the next morning I did some internet research (e.g., http://ca.askmen.com/top_10/cars/top-10-mechanic-scams.html &
http://www.rd.com/slideshows/13-things-your-car-mechanic-wont-tell-you-slideshow/ ) to find that some of them were indeed listed as common scams run by mechanics. I also found out from my maintenance manual that some of the work wasn't recommended by the manufacturer. So I decided to ask more questions about the bill.
Early in the afternoon I called to see if my car was done. I could only get voice mail and no one returned my calls. Finally I called the next door parts company and they assisted in getting someone to answer at RD. I was told the person I last dealt with (the day before) was "no longer with us", but that my car would be done by 5pm. I drove over at 5, got the invoice, asked to get the old parts, and asked to speak with the mechanics about the work done. I got satisfactory answers for some of my questions (e.g., Q: how was wear on the timing belt determined?, A: wear stripes could be seen on the old belt; Q: why was transmission fluid replaced?, A: the old fluid was dark). I got equivocal answers to other questions (e.g., Q: why was engine coolant replaced? A: test indicated that coolant only good to -15degrees, not the -30 recommended). I got unsatisfactory answers to yet other questions (Q: why had a "coolant flush" costing $80 been done?; Q: Why had all the spark plug wires been replaced? A: the computer showed some history of misfiring for 2 cylinders, and it was cheaper to buy and install all 4 than just 2).
I was then told that the garage did not have a computer chip needed to complete the replacement of transmission fluid and hence, the car needed to be towed to the local Subaru dealer (who had the required chip). I asked why I had been told the car would be ready by 5pm given this hitch and told the person who talked to me didn't know about it. It was arranged that I would drive home (again) in the loaner, and that my car would be returned to me at home the next morning.
That night I did some more research on repairs (e.g., recommended intervals for certain services, see
http://www.baierlsubaru.com/service-menu-page.htm ), and also called my son-in-law, a certified mechanic. Collating all the information I had, I judged that two of repairs done on my car (~$200 cost) had been totally unnecessary--replacing all the spark plug wires (for which I was charged $126.66) and doing a coolant flush (for which I was charged $79.97). Neither was called for by the maintenance schedule nor were they every justified to my satisfaction.
After the car was delivered the next morning, I called RD to pay by credit card. I also told their representative about my belief that some of the work done was unnecessary. He said that some customers wanted to err on the side of safety and that was why certain work was done.
So, to sum up, my experience was mixed. The staff were courteous and eager to please, and I have no reason to doubt that the necessary work was done well and professionally. On the other hand, it took 2.5 days to get the work completed, I had to make multiple trips, and most importantly, I was sold services which every reputable source I have been able to consult indicates were wholly unnecessary.
I realize that this kind of padding of the bill is extremely common. If I had known when I first went in what I know now, I probably would have inspected and challenged the recommendations more closely--as always, caveat emptor ("let the buyer beware"). But what I'm looking for in my mechanic (or doctor or contractor or...) is someone I can trust not to take advantage of my lack of knowledge to increase their profit. Sadly, RD did not earn that trust; I will not return nor could I recommend them.
The guys were very nice, timely and called when the car was ready,
they were great.
Overall, I think that they are a shop just starting out. It's hard to believe that all of the reviews listed are for THIS shop. Maybe there are other locations for RMB Auto. Their receipt says Able & Affordable Repair/Managed by RMB Auto. I choose this shop based on the reviews of others and what their services include. I felt like the shop is NOT what it says on Angies List. Kind of like I was lied to.
