He has inspected our now home and cottage and has had several recommendations on items that we could fix ourselves as well as a list of other professionals he knows to be fair and honest.
Howard is a wealth of knowledge and had always treated us like family.
Update: On his promised return visit to fix easy things, he was short and rude over the phone. Saying I called and made appointments 4 times (Called and talked about it, but never scheduled anything). It made me feel uncomfortable and went from an A rating to a C. Disappointed. For $300, he should be more than willing, friendly and willing to do anything.
When I addressed the issue with Mr. Casey, he became very condescending and accusatory, saying he did have my best interests in mind, repeatedly brought up other issues with the house that he addressed (that I am not having problems with), and that he wouldn't have gone on the roof to inspect it because of the slope and the weather conditions (though it was a beautiful August day, sunny and 80º according to the inspection report).
Had I known the roof had issues significant enought to warrant a $1000 repair or a $5000 reroofing job within a year of purchase, I would not have purchased this home. The residents across the street estimate that the roof hasn't been done in 20-30 years and that the previous owners had problems with it. The two roofing contractors we had out to estimate repairs say the shingles are not 10 years old or have 10 years of useful life left.
My recent phone conversation with Mr. Casey resulted in him telling me that as long as water isn't pouring in and the roof isn't collapsing, it is in acceptable condition.
While he identified many potential issues with the house before closing, which is appreciated despite not having any major issues (wet foundation, old furnace, etc.), the roof was completely unexpected. I would not recommend this inspector unless you have a roofing contractor do a follow up inspection.
