From the very first meeting at our home to discuss the scope of the project, we were impressed with their professionalism and knowledge. Their quote was competitive, (within five percent of other proposals), and the materials Pennings used for the job were, in some cases, superior. They were patient with us as we tweaked the design multiple times. We were delighted at the creativity and inspiration their architect provided to our project. Careful attention was paid to insuring the addition looked like it was part of the original design of the home, and it shows! The architect gave us multiple options to choose from, one of which even decreased the footprint without compromising design or our priorities, and actually reduced costs. Through the process, we met all of the senior management at the company. Not only is everyone extremely competent, but also personally delightful. They are very customer focused, and are always looking to exceed expectations. Our project manager has been phenomenal. From the very beginning, he shared the daily schedule with us so we knew exactly what to expect and prepare for. Changes were also communicated, and accommodations were made to be as non-intrusive as possible in our lives during construction. We were involved in every decision, whether small or large, and we had the freedom to make adjustments along the way. If any concerns arose with sub-contractors, we only had to communicate with Pennings and any issues were handled immediately. We chose to take on some of the work ourselves to reduce the overall cost of the project, and there were no objections. In fact, our project manager often provided advice to us or lent a hand when possible. Pennings has been a delight to work with. From start to finish, it was an exceptionally positive experience and we are thrilled with the outcome.

Met with the estimator. He was professional though not highly personable but the second part does not matter much. I received the quote in a week or so after the initial visit. I am a do-it-yourselfer but this is a job I just did not feel like doing. However, I decided to do the work myself after seeing the cost. I don't necessarily think it was a bad quote but the cost seemed way too much for something I can do easily myself.

It was a nightmare. Everything looked to be going well, until they left. They charged us for all kinds of things that they never did. When I refused to pay they settled with me and forced me to sign a disclosure agreement. Biggest mistake that I made, because I had no idea how many corners they cut along the way. Now I'm having to hire other contractors to come finish the work that Pennings and Sons was under contract to provide. We gave Pennings and Sons over 300,000 dollars, our life savings to turn our home into a dream home and all they did is turn it into a home of nightmares. Beware, find someone else. I've heard sever stories of them doing this to a lot of they're customers but they only get the review info to the few happy ones. Stay away.
Response from Pennings and Sons
"Pennings & Sons is not infallible, however, we continue to regularly do great work and are pleased to provide a comprehensive Limited Lifetime Warranty on all new and major remodeled homes for work that we contract. This is attested to by the profusion of other reviews you will find online. Due to several factors, this project proved extremely challenging, and one in which the Owner chose to release the company of all future and past responsibility for the project in lieu of payment for work completed. An issue came up afterwards (which unfortunately happens sometimes in construction projects) and the Owner apparently is unhappy with the settlement he chose. When offered to continue the discussion about it prior to this posting, the Owner chose instead to take his frustration to the web. We take all reviews seriously and learn what we can from each one"

Rick from Pennings showed up when he said he would. All work was done quick and very professional. The cost was very reasonable. Without a doubt, I will hire them again for anything. A huge thanks to this company.

They were referred to me by a friend. I called the office approximately a week and a half ago and they scheduled the appointment for today. I forgot about the appointment, and had just returned home, so admittedly I was frazzled when the sales person showed up. I walked him through what I wanted. We wanted our entryway updated, bathroom updated and a shower installed as well as our laundry room turned into a mud room/laundry room. We didn't even get to the last part because his "estimates" were not even in the same ballpark. From past jobs, he "estimated" that our front entry would cost $10,000! I wasn't looking for a total gut. I want a new double front door, tile installed, the popcorn ceiling scraped, new molding and about 6 sheets maximum of drywall to replace the heavily plastered walls. And he said there was no way he could get in out of my bathroom for less than $15,000. I have received several quotes for this job and the highest I received was $14000 for all 3 rooms. He didn't take out a tape measure, he didn't ask me what I was thinking for finishes, he didn't want to be even be considered for this job.

We liked the design of his proposed solution.  We liked the choice of
materials.  Pennings was the first choice for us kids, but it was my
mother who had the final say, and she chose another contractor for her
own reasons (she is 92).

Everyone on the team -- Keith, Marty, and Gregg from the Pennings Handyman division -- were helpful, prompt, responsive, and really pleasant.  The planning and scheduling went very smoothly; work started as planned.  As with many projects, there were a few unforeseen bumps, but these were handled promptly and with grace -- which in my mind is actually a better test of a company than never having had anything go awry at all.  Although this company is not what I would describe as the cheapeat bunny in the patch, I do really feel I got great value and service for my investment.  I love working with Pennings.

The quote they gave me was overpriced.  They were speedy to respond and take a look at the work.  However, they did not send a contractor to look at the work.  They did previous work that was well done, but even then it was expensive.
Response from Pennings and Sons
"[member name removed], Thanks for your review. We appreciate the work you’ve had us do! Price is a relative thing, and relative to a one man operation, we are going to be more expensive. And sometimes the cost of accepting a lower price can far exceed that lower price in the end. You know in advance what our rates or price will be, so you have every opportunity to either accept or decline what we offer. Not sure what you mean by not sending a contractor…We are a licensed contractor. All of our sales people are licensed to sell for the company and most of them are also licensed builders in the State of Michigan."

They were a little bit higher then other bids but I've herd good things about them that justified the price. They were wonderful absolutely wonderful, not a single complaint. The guy that that did most of the worked loved his job. He even came and visited my dog once the job was completed. But they were all great people to deal with and I was very comfortable.

The renovations went well and stayed on tract. We originally met with the owner of the business. We discussed the scope of the project. He provided a design within a few weeks to which we agreed. The project was started within a few weeks and left to his project manager who provided a detailed project design and schedule. They kept to the schedule and completed the work as planned. Clean-up was excellent. I recommend this company to anyone that asks.

My husband and I were very impressed with Pennings. We met with Brian who explained the process with us and gave insight on his perspective on remodeling and building projects. He was personable and approachable, and even offered to keep an eye out for prospective houses that fit our requirements. We hope to work with him in the coming year.
