He repositioned towel bar in bathroom and in the process tore the top layer of drywall off. He did not repair the tear. He took old cove molding off the bedroom wall and filled in the holes from the nails. This is the only job that was done well. He mudded and sanded 2 small areas on kitchen ceiling, 1 small area on living room cove molding, and one small area on hall wall. He told us that the cove molding could use another coat and sanding, but he said the kitchen was all ready to paint. It was awful. If I had wanted it to look like that, I would have done it myself. Their ad in Angie's List says free estimates. No such thing with these guys. They told me I would be able to get an estimate for outside trim painting but I would have to pay for it. They ran a coupon for pay for 5 hours and get the 6th hour free. He balked at taking the coupon - said the work had to be done in 5 consecutive hours to qualify. Not my fault that he came to the house for 3 hours, left, came back for 2 hours and then said it had to be consecutive hours. To their credit, after a little discussion, they honored the coupon. I took pictures of the mudding/sanding job in the kitchen and sent it to their office to show them what it looked like. They said he had a bad week and would come back to finish the job. I said he told us it was finished and ready to paint, so why doesn't he just come back to fix the job. They could do that, but he would be on the clock again. On the clock again to FIX, not finish, a poorly done job. There was no way I was going to pay them another penny. It was awful and expensive. I had to get someone else in to fix this mess. I also had to clean up all the sanding dust from this job. For $700.00 you would think they could at least have done that. Never again will I have them do any work.

I wish I could say the deck was a different story, but sadly I cannot. They did do a good job washing the deck, other than leaving the water running one day (luckily we found it on at about midnight), but that is about it. This prep job was less than sufficient because there were some sap spots and vines that they just painted over instead of being cleaned off. Also, the deck was in need of a good sanding before painting, but this also was not done. This part of the job did take awhile because the weather was not cooperating, but on days/weeks that were nice they would come out for maybe 2 hours and then leave, which was how the whole project was handled. The paint job was done in much the same way as the siding, with a very thin coat that barely covered the area, however you can still tell that it was rushed because of the splash/drip marks on the boards and the siding. Also you can tell it was rushed by the fact that we had to have them out multiple times to repaint posts and boards that were missed.
Upon final inspection I noticed a lot of the problems previously sighted had not been fully fixed and had them back out to redo them. In addition I did mention that it looked like the painting job did not sufficiently cover the area and that it seemed thin in a number of spots. I was told that this was just fine, but if I wanted another coat I would have to pay extra for it since it was not priced. This is a reasonable request on their part, if the job had been done to a professional level, which it had not. After many excuses and many touch-up jobs, I called it quits and just payed the bill. In any case it is a new year and it looks like we will be redoing their work.
"While we certainly would like to have had this Angie's List Client as a customer we have checked our database for both the name and address and have not come up with anything. According to our records this person has never been a customer of Mr. Handyman of Kalamazoo-St.Joseph. She must have confused us with someone else."
"We just want to thank this customer for the opportunity to complete their work for them and are glad that they are satisfied with the results. We will pass on her comments to our technician. At Mr.Handyman we take customer satisfaction seriously and are glad when our customers let us know how we did as all feedback provides an opportunity for improvement or reinforcement of our customer service goals."
The estimate beat Van Tuinen by 20 to 30%.
The work was performed over 2 weeks, first the power wash, then the staining after the deck dried out.
There was rain so the staining work was delayed by several days, no fault of Mr. Handyman.
"We thank this customer for the feedback but will be following up to understand where we could have done better. It appears that she was basically satisfied but there was apparently something that could have been improved."
"Unfortunately, as is encountered in many remodeling or repair jobs, the scope of the work changed once we were able to peel back the "layers". This job was a bathroom remodel. Upon initial inspection it was noted in the estimate that there was damage to the sub-flooring(under the ceramic tile) in the toilet area. We knew that we would need to do some sub-floor repairs in this small area prior to putting in the new tile. Once the technician started removing the tile in the toilet area he noted that the sub-flooring material on top of the original sub-flooring was "particle board". This material had been installed by whoever had installed the ceramic tile that we were pulling up. Particle board is the worst material to use for sub-flooring in a bathroom room due to the wet nature of the area. When particle board gets wet it "disintegrates", ie. softens up and becomes particles, no longer board like. The "soft" floor in the toilet area was due to a wax ring leak in the toilet to sanitary flange connection. As the technician pulled up more tile in the tub area he noted the same wet/soft subflooring issues near the tub. At that point the technician made the decision to pull up the entire layer of particle board sub-flooring along with the old tile in the entire bathroom. This additional work was now beyond the scope of what was originally quoted. Unfortunately, the technician did not immediately inform the customer of the problem or the office before moving ahead with this extra work. The office became aware of the issue when a field visit was made by the owner later that day. At Mr. Handyman we don't like surprises for our customers or for ourselves and therefore try to manage these types of issues in advance. When preparing estimates/quotes for customers we use a form that contains verbiage that identifies the potential for the unexpected and that when these instances occur we need to get together to discuss the impact to the project scope from both a timing and cost perspective. When we approached the customer to discuss the added work/cost issue later that day it did not go well. The customer insisted that there would be no discussion around added cost and that we would have to "live" with our original estimate. We felt that this was unreasonable in light of the amount of extra labor and materials provided (~$400) but it was also apparent that we had failed to communicate on a timely basis before moving forward with the additional work. We certainly were not going to walk away from the job because that is not what we do. We decided that the best course of action was to complete the job to the best of our abilities which the owner later confirmed. We chalked this up to a learning experience and have since tried to ensure we are timely in addressing these types of issues and also to discuss with the customer beforehand the potential for surprises and how they will be addressed when and if they occur."
