Mister Sparky

I called Mr. Sparky because I subscribed to their Comfort Club service, a $20 monthly offering that includes Front of the Line Service, Discounted Service Fee, 10% off Repairs, and 5% off New Repairs. Despite my subscription, I found that they are super expensive, and they inflate the price for diagnosing electrical problems to offer you a discount on the service to fix the issue if you choose them for the work. For example, I called them to fix a shower fan that was tripping the circuit. The technician arrived and spent about 40 minutes diagnosing the issue and explaining their convoluted billing scheme. He confirmed what I told him what was going on. They charged me almost $450 for a single-circuit diagnosis with a $60 reserve service fee. They offered to deduct $200 from the $1,300 estimate to replace the shower fan. They also didn't guarantee the diagnosis and noted that other things could come up after they replace the fan, which could add more cost. I decided not to use them and fixed the fan myself by swapping out the fan motor within the enclosure. I found a new replacement fan on Amazon for $99, which had the required parts. It was an expensive lesson, though, since I was still overcharged $450 for very little value. $200-$250 would have been reasonable for what they actually provided. Their approach of padding diagnosis fees is borderline criminal. They should charge for the work they do. Because of this, I would avoid doing business with this company. I have also canceled my Comfort Club subscription.

Service was completed timely and skillfully. This was a big job and they were very flexible and reasonable. I was very impressed with the whole process and the way they treated me.

Very well, the gentleman was very knowledgeable.

Scheduling the appointment was very easy. The person showed up on time for the estimate, and was very considerate (taking off shoes, etc.) and professional. Provided clear explanations of what he could to for us.
We asked them to repair the things we knew we needed to have done (replacing outlets, replacing light switches). This work was done expertly and professionally. I had the sense that I was paying for more expertise than was strictly necessary for an easy job, but that's okay with me.
Here's what I did not like, and why I will not be hiring this firm again: I believe they used fear to recommend (even push for) work that we did not need. I am not an electrician so you can take my statement for whatever you think it is worth. But I do not believe this event falls into a grey area; my opinion is that they were pushing the edges of intentional dishonesty. Specifically, the Mr. Sparky electrician insisted on looking at our breaker box "as long as I'm here" even though it was not related to the reason we called. He saw some discoloration on some metal in there (caused by oxidation, definitely not water), and claimed that we were in grave danger of having an electrical fire. He recommended that we immediately have the whole breaker box replaced (for $700).
I got a second opinion from an independent licensed electrician who was very experienced and had an assistant (maybe an apprentice?) with him. I didn't tell him what anyone else said. I just had him look at the breaker box. I specifically asked about this discoloration. He said that was normal for a house my age, that a bit of oxidation on the metal parts would not affect the function, and that there was nothing to worry about. Both he and his assistant said that they would never recommend that a breaker box be replaced based on what they saw. (In fact, they were confused about why I was pushing this line of questioning and I fessed up that I was checking out another electrician's recommendation.)
So this is what I am providing you: my experience is that one electrician disagreed with another one, and I do not have the expertise to say who is right. But my read of the situation is that the one who did not recommend $700 worth of work on something I didn't call them in to look at is likely the more honest party. I feel strongly about this, but you can take this for what it is worth.

They arrived on time. They did a good job. They explained to my wife what they were going to do. They were courteous and efficient. It works.

The tech was very informative and pleasent .he answered all our questions, covered his shoes when going in and out

It went well overall. Response time from call to when they were able to come was great.

They service about a quarter of the state. Overall grade "A"

They were a little more on the expensive side but the technicians were very knowledgeable. They told us exactly what was going to be done so there wasn't any guesswork. They told us exactly what materials they were going to use to replace the old system so we knew whether we were getting quality equipment and we could compare to some of the other quotes. Some of the other quotes were a little bit lower but we had no idea what electrical boxes and that type of thing they were using. We would use them again.
