I purchased my Honda Odyssey in 2011 through Rivertown, and Randy and the sales staff were extremely helpful and great to work with. My previous Odyssey had been totaled, and he knew I needed a replacement quickly. He found me a great used van, expedited the financing, and even replaced the tires at no additional cost. He went over all the newer options and called me a few days later to make sure everything was going well.
Unfortunately, I can't give the service department the same glowing review. I went there for oil changes, both because they are $14.95 and because I felt I could trust a Honda shop. There is always two long lines of cars waiting for oil changes, and it tends to take longer to get the work done. For my last oil change, I was there over 90 minutes. Worst of all, I have waited in Rivertown oil change lines for over two years before someone in service thought to tell me that, since I had purchased the van there, I could make an appointment and avoid the wait.
In addition, while I'm waiting, they continually try to sell additional services (such as tire rotations) or tell me I need new parts or tires and quot;immediatelyand quot; (a mechanic at a different shop said I could wait another six months).
After the long wait, the oil change process itself has a few issues. The mechanics routinely forget the reset the oil-life indicator on the dashboard (I've figured out how to do it myself), and after giving up on waiting and going somewhere else, I was told that two of the screws on the air filter casing weren't even there and hadn't been there in a while (one was gone completely; the other had been sheared off and the top set in the hole).
Now that I know I can make appointments, I will probably go back for oil changes--I'll just need to decline the upsells and make sure the indicator is reset. I will certainly be returning when I need to purchase my next vehicle.
While changing the oil on our Honda Odyssey they recommended that we rotate our tires so they wore evenly. Thinking that sounded logical we agreed. This should have been simple and as far as we knew it was . . . until two weeks ago.
We went to Discount Tire to get a soft tire looked at and were informed that all four tires had been wearing unevenly (as on the inside sidewall of the tire - not normal) and that we would need to replace all four tires. After talking to the reps at Discount Tire it was obvious that the irregular wear on the rear tires (which were in the front when it went into Rivertown Honda) had happened while they were on the front of the van.
Unfortunately, when Rivertown Honda rotated the tires they didn't bother to tell us about the uneven wear and that meant that now we needed four new tires, not just two. We returned to Rivertown Honda and although they were nice to deal with and offered slight discount to do the repair work on the suspension (which was causing the uneven tire wear) they refused to take any responsibility for the additional two tires.
We took our van to CARS Automotive in Jenison and got the suspension work done for hundreds less (even after Rivertown's discount) and got the work performed the next day.
I think this was just a bad communication on the part of the service team at Rivertown. Had they informed us of the uneven wear at the time the tires were rotated we would have saved the cost of two more tires.
In our most recent experience, we were very leery of getting our teenage daughter's Honda repaired, especially at a cost of $1000. But, she can't afford to get another car right now, and we live out of town, so she needs reliable transportation. Our service tech, Dwayne Scheller took the time to talk with not only us, but our daughter as well about the pros and cons of fixing the car. In fact, he initially discouraged us from doing so, but after weighing all the options, we all decided it was the best option.
A word about Dwain - he's one of the most professional and honest individuals I've ever met. In fact, the whole team at Rivertown exemplifies what service, excellence and integrity are all about. I wish I could've taken them with us when we moved. Good mechanics are hard to find.
They are always available to give you a ride to/from the shop if your car is in for extended service- either to the mall for the afternoon, or back and forth from your home. They're eager to please, will offer you a rental if you need one at no cost, and they're always very polite.
When I have had my car in for emergency service at other Honda dealerships out of state, and felt like I was being taken advantage of, the staff at Rivertown has actually called the dealership and gone over everything, advocating for me, saving me over $3,000 in and quot;fakeand quot; problems the less than reputable dealerships have tried to force on me.
I'd recommend these folks in a heartbeat!
A couple of weeks ago I contacted Rivertown Honda to have a remote starter installed on our car. I asked for a price quote on the remote starter for the 2011 CRV, and they gave me one. I then scheduled to have the starter installed, and was pleased to know it could be done the next day. My wife took the car in, and though it took several hours longer than they had quoted, we were still excited at how fast it could be done.
When I returned home from work that evening she showed me the remote starter, and it was not the Honda starter, but a different brand I had not heard of.
I contacted our service technician the next day to ask why a non-Honda part had been installed in our car, and was told that they generally do not install the Honda starters because they are more expensive.
The whole point of going to the dealer to have this installed was so that a Honda part (an option when buying the car new, and according to Honda, will work with our car's anti-theft system, whereas other brands will interfere.) could be installed in our Honda. If I had know the price was for a generic part, I could have shopped around, or not had it installed at all.
