After reading some of the reviews on here, I was a bit skeptical. But, I determined that all their negative reviews were around ice removal and not pertaining to gutters. (I promise I won't have them come to remove ice dams.) I decided to take a chance on the gutters.
I had requested quotes from about 8 different providers. Half of them never showed up for the quote. Those that did were pretty good but their product was not as good as All Gutter Systems. Although they were not the cheapest, they were the best quality. They were very professional. When I contacted them to actually do the work, I explained that I was working some very long hours, so I would not be around to watch them perform the work. They were very understanding and accommodated my every wish.
When I arrived home from work, I wasn't sure they came. The place was so clean, I didn't think they showed up, but a closer look reveled that they gutters, hoods, and downspouts were all installed. The new gutters blended right in to the existing roof line.
So 5pm rolled around, with no crew at my house. I called the office. They said they would call the crew and get back to me. No response. So I called again, was transferred to someone else who said, "you were a flex job and we would squeeze you in if we could." So I'm glad I waited at home all day for no one to show up. I was told they would be getting a late start the next morning, as it was supposed to be very windy, but could expect a crew around noon.
The next morning, I received a phone call at 11:30 stating they would arrive sometime that day. So now we're onto day 2 of sitting around the house. At 3:30 p.m, the crew arrived to the house. With ladders, and ice chisels. They created channels in the ice for water to drip down instead of dripping into my house. Which, in their defense, worked nicely. We did not have any further water damage.
So, basically, I payed almost $500 for 2 twenty-year-olds to come and do the same thing my husband could do for the price of a life insurance policy. I think the best part of this whole experience was the gut-sinking feeling I got when one of the workers yelled to the other one, "Hey, can you get me an axe off the truck?" No, you may not use an axe on my roof.
Just make sure you make sure you find out how exactly the company will be removing the ice from your roof.
Unfortunately, I relied on the ratings for this company for installation of gutters and not ice and snow removal. I have no hesitation giving this company a complete “F” rating for their work allegedly removing ice and snow from my house. Granted, this is an old farm house, which was explained to the company on the phone, and there was a tremendous ice buildup around the edges of the porches on which they were asked to work. Nevertheless, both the company representative and the service people were repeatedly asked if what they would do would eliminate the leaks and they assured me it would. That turned out to be a totally dishonest statement. Not only did their work not stop the leaks, but within an hour after they left, I had at least 8 more leaks than I had when they arrived.
Initially, an appointment was set up for Saturday morning, February 8, at 8:30. On Saturday morning, someone named Bill called and said that he was short two people and would have to reschedule me for tomorrow afternoon, which was Sunday. He asked if that would be okay, and I agreed, responding that I apparently didn’t have a choice. My porch was leaking and I wanted the leaks stopped. On Sunday, after the work was completed and the repair people were preparing the bill, there was mention made of charging me extra because it was a Sunday. There was never any mention made by Bill of an extra charge for a Sunday service call and besides it was the company’s fault that the work was not done when originally scheduled on a Saturday, so why should I be penalized? Eventually, I was given the standard rate, but I had to argue for it.
On Sunday about 8:00 a.m. someone called and said they would be at my house within 15-20 minutes. What happened to Sunday afternoon? When they arrived, I pointed out the porches where the snow and ice buildup was obvious and asked if they could also remove some of the snow on the roof above the north porch roof, since they charge by the hour, not by the job. They began removing their equipment from their truck and, I believe, their first efforts were directed at raking snow off the various porch roofs. I did not think it was necessary for me to stay outside and observe them while they worked. During the course of the next two hours, there were noises of loud hammering going on which I assumed was how they “made channels” in the ice for the runoff when snow and ice melted.
My brother, Ted, who was clearing snow from our driveway, told me they had finished and were preparing the bill. I went outside to their truck, we settled the question of the proposed Sunday surcharge and I paid the bill with a credit card.
Within an hour after All Gutters left, I went to the room adjacent to the north porch and heard a “splat” sound by the doorway to the north porch. In the ceiling over the doorway was a wet strip about 4-5 feet in length where the ceiling had begun to leak. As I stepped through the doorway to the porch, a drop of water fell from the porch ceiling on my shoulder. There were three more leaks from the porch ceiling along the wall over the doorway to the adjacent room. A more thorough search revealed four more leaks along that wall.
After moving furniture and putting buckets under the leaks, I called Bill at All Gutters, got his answering machine and left a message describing the immediate nature of the problem. As it became more apparent that these leaks were going to get worse and not better as I had been promised, I called the main number for the company and got the owner, Tony, and explained the situation. He said my complaint was unusual, that their phones were ringing off the hook and they were extremely busy, but Bill was in the area and he would have him come over and check things out. Bill arrived about 1:30 or so, I can’t be more precise because I was trying to keep ahead of all the leaks and trying to prevent damage to the furniture on the porch by moving things out of the way of the dripping water.
Keep in mind that Bill was responsible for the confusion surrounding the cancellation of the Saturday appointment and the mishandling of the Sunday appointment. Bill never went up on the roof to look at what had been done by his people. He did come inside and look at the areas where the water was coming in.
This is where we enter the Twilight Zone. Upon questioning about why the work performed by his company not only did NOT stop the previous leaks as it was claimed it would, but resulted in 8-9 more leaks than before in areas where there had NEVER previously been any leaks, he explained that this happened because the sun was shining and the snow was melting and had nothing to do with the fact that their company had been up on the roof and was pounding “channels” in the ice buildup rather than completely removing that ice buildup. The following is a direct quote:
Me: Let me see if I understand this. You are telling me that those 8-9 leaks would have spontaneously occurred this morning whether your people had been here or not?
Bill: Yes, because the sun is shining and the snow is melting. You have a roof problem, so the leaks happened. The leaks would have happened whether we were here or not.
Basically, the roof was defective and was permitting the melting snow to back up and come inside my house. Excuse me, but didn’t you say that the removal of that melting snow and ice buildup was supposed to prevent this when I called to see if your company could solve my problem? This is the worst excuse since “the dog ate my homework” defense. Additionally, Bill was able to draw these conclusions from standing in my driveway and never getting up on the roof.
It should be noted that when the leaks began, the sun had not yet come out and the temperature was in the low 20’s and was not expected to get over 23 degrees. Additionally, if those “channels” about which they brag so much are so terrific, why weren’t they taking that allegedly melting snow off the roof instead of feeding it back into the house?
Bill’s statements and attitude left me with the impression that: (1) he couldn’t care less about the leaks; (2) he would never believe that his company had anything to do with them; (3) whatever damage was caused by the leaks was my problem and why was I bothering him with it. I left him standing in my driveway taking pictures of the roof with his cell phone. Now I need extensive roof repairs (and my roof was not that old), there is drywall that will need to be replaced or repaired, the tongue-in-groove paneling on the porch that has water dripping from it will likely warp and require who knows how much work to put it back in shape, but none of this concerns All Gutter Systems. I will NEVER EVER use this company again and certainly wouldn’t recommend them for anything.
