I had him for the deck, for my daughter. They had to come back the next year and paint it because it had all come off. I was kind of interested in redoing our deck, but I don't know if I would go with him again.
Response from Hillis Brothers Painting
"Hi [Removed Member Name], Decks are high wear and tear surfaces. The horizontal surfaces lend themselves to having to be done more often due to the fact that it is not protected from the elements, and rain and snow sit on the deck. My records show we came back to fulfill our warranty when some of the stain came off. I hope you do keep us in mind for your next project. We have been doing for over 25 years, and have a great track record of maintaining our warranties. Thanks, Nathan"

They spray painted the walls and did not use a roller to even out the paint. It looked terrible but the owner of this company denied being able to see what I pointed out as so obvious. It was a hassle to get the company to even come out and apply another coat to fix the problem
Response from Hillis Brothers Painting
"I have no record of this customer. I do the estimates for our company and don't remember being at the street listed. It says that we did the work six years ago? Seems like a long time to wait to put in a complaint. She may call me directly at my phone 616.293.3873 to discuss. My guess is that with the length of time since the work was done, she may have us confused with another company. [Member Name Removed] please have your records ready, because I don't have any record of this job. Thanks, Nathan Hillis Owner"

Deck was not cleaned well, stain was applied over existing mold. Was a very thin coat. I'm not sure but I don't think they got more stain, just used what was left from the last time they did the job.
Trim was not prepped, just painted over.
Do not use the carpenter they recommend.
I have used Hillis Brothers before and Nate is very responsive. There was a young man who was the site supervisor who seemed to care less when I pointed out my concerns.
To be fair, it was a very rainy summer and they were trying to fit in the work in between storms.

The whole process from initial bid to project completion went smoothly and I am satisfied with the results.  Their price was my only concern, I believe it was high.  However I needed the job completed before the cold weather set in and they were able to complete the job in time.

They Hills Brothers presented a professional demeanor during their initial visit. The person providing the quote was very friendly and seemed knowledgable. The quality of their painting was very disappointing. There were dried paint drips, nail pops that were not repaired, shadows and streaks. The biggest disappointment was their failure to use a primer to seal in the smokey smell we informed them about during our initial visit. They used an "odor absorbing" paint but, every painter we have spoken to since that time said that they should have used a sealing primer like Kilzit first. We wasted a lot of money due to their lack of knowledge.
Response from Hillis Brothers Painting
"I've talked with Mrs. [Removed member name] in the last couple of months. She never spoke to be about paint chips, nail pops or shadows. If she had, I would set an appointment to look at what she was talking about. [Removed member name] did speak to me about the smoke smell. On our initial consultation, I had said there was a paint that had come onto the market that would help absorb odors. I did not promise that it would take away the smell. The ceilings in the great room had not been painted at that time, and I imagine that this and the smoking done in other parts of the house may contribute to that smell. Perhaps even the carpet."

October/2013- First impressions were great, team came on time and finished in one day, however I circled multiple drywall issues I wanted repaired and 3 were missed.

After inspecting the work the hall/stairway was done pretty poorly.  I spoke with company rep and he said he would have another crew sent out to fix touch ups (great!) I was informed that it was a lifetime guarantee...which later this October 2014 I was told is only 2 year guarantee...(which is fine)

Company rep's nephew came out who is awesome!  He saw right away the mistakes and completely re-did my hallway and a few of the drywall spots, he didn't have the right product for another drywall spot and he told me that if I had an issue just call again because they guarantee the work...

The first team only used 1 coat and ran out of paint and just tried to slide by.  You could see the 1 coat triangle lines left.

About a year later...

I still have that one drywall crack issue that I asked to be fixed because it was bothering me...as well as me noticing 'triangle' lines above a closet that you can only see in certain light and more 'triangle' lines on my stairwell which again is in certain light.

I called to get another quote on a bedroom and for them to look at touching up my place..and company rep came out October/2014..basically saying the drywall was a foundation issue and nothing they could do (BS because its not..its over hang on the stairwell...and furthermore they shouldn't have said they could fix it the first time when I got the initial quote from them)  He also couldn't see the 'triangle' spots that his nephew could clearly see and said that they wouldn't do it unless I went with him on the bedroom quote.  Which the bedroom quote for a repeat customer I thought was quite high (double a competitor)...to which he said was well the economy has picked up so we charge more.  I'm pretty sure he just didn't want to do the touch up's that supposedly were guaranteed for 2 years.

I was planning on having them do my basement because they were the cheapest quote for 'decent' work...but they definitely are not worth the higher quotes of an 'improved' economy pricing...especially with the elitist/arrogant attitude that was given when I asked about the touch up.

work was done ok on time etc. just found spots later that were missed, and windows were not clean due to overspray and lack of clean up.  I will take blame for not calling and complaining sooner, but just upset feeling it should have been done right the first time.

Response time for them to come out and estimate was very quick.   Estimate was the lowest we had received by quite a bit.   Painters were courteous.  I was home during the first day of painting and they were very respectful of the home and our things.   They covered up and taped off surfaces.   They made sure I like the colors after they were applied.   Very fast work and it looks amazing.

They were there when they said they would be and did an excellent and professional job.  The house and deck look great.  They did a great job of keeping things clean and when they were done, you could not tell they had been there, except for the great looking paint and stain job.

Hillis Bros arrived as scheduled on Friday and two workers treated all decking surfaces and then gently powerwashed to remove all of the neglected sins. The previous owners had self powerwashed and sealed on a fairly regular basis,. But the powerwashing had been quite vigorous and had left the wood sharply jagged with the raised grain very rough and saw-toothed. Hillis Bros returned on Monday after the wood had dryed for two days. They used a large floor sander for all the decking and seating benches. A hand sander was used for the railings. The stain/sealer was brushed and sprayed and looks terrific. Whole job took about 3 hours on each of two days and clean-up was very good.
The deck, rails, and seating are no longer rough and "splintery." Our two year old Grand Daughter can now sit and slide on the surfaces without scratching her legs.

The interior painting was excellent. I was very pleased with the bathrooms, but I was not pleased with the deck. After scheduling an appointment, they did not come for a whole week and they didn’t call either. Then all of a sudden they popped up. The same thing happened with the work on the deck. Their cleanup wasn’t that good. I notified them about the problems I had and they got the paint off the house somewhat. I did not understand their pricing in the beginning. I would not recommend them to others and I do not think I would use them again.

I am very disappointed with this company. I had various areas painted; a foyer, a stairwell, some interior doors and trim in 3 areas. During the painting, a drop of white paint ended up in the middle of a custom-ordered, dark red, roman shade in a room that was not being painted. It was very noticeable and I called the company to have the situation rectified. They came out to inspect it while stating they 'couldn't imagine how it ended up there since they weren't even painting in that room', though they had painting near it. My thoughts exactly, I wouldn't have expected such ineptness. The third time out, they proceeded to try to remove the paint with an abrasive paint thinner on a delicate, silk shade. Beforehand I had pulled out the manufacturer's instructions, which did not recommend abrasive or harsh cleaners. They were able to remove the paint on the outer core of the shade, not on the inner core where it is still adhered, BUT in the process left behind a 'watermark' from the paint thinner. I was not happy because it was not treated according to manufacturer's instructions, because it was not completely removed, because it had left behind a grease-like mark, and because it was a custom, special-order, moderately expensive shade, so they agreed to reorder another shade. I pulled out the receipt and gave them the information. I tried to be friendly and stated that I knew they would have to order it, but I was willing to wait since in the end it would be as if it never happened. Fast forward to three months later. Having heard nothing from the company I contacted Nathan Hillis and inquired about the status of the shade. [It had NOT taken me THAT long to order and install SIX of the same shades]. He stated that he was unaware of any status, and gave an excuse that he had been traveling, so he didn't know. I charged back the amount thinking the situation would be rectified, but they countered and received back the payment. It is almost 5 months later -- still the problem has not been solved as I was promised. It is a shame that they damaged a part of my house they weren't even authorized to work on and that they won't fix or compensate the problem. I was willing to overlook the paint on the floors and cabinets that had seeped through the 1" masking [not blue painter's] tape they used. I was willing to overlook the paint speckles in the carpet up a stairway next to the trim that had been painted -- I even cut some of the larger ones out of the carpet, because overall it wasn't that noticeable, even though I knew it was there. I was willing to forgive them for the first time around when they missed approx a 12" x 3" area on a door as well as roller strokes missed during painting [the first time] on some wainscoting -- which they fixed after I called them out on it when the job was done BEFORE I paid them. I even overlooked the 'lines' which were not 'crisp'. But, unfortunately, the shade, blew the whole thing for me.
