In June 2010, our old furnace and a/c died (the cost to repair them was not worth it, and Paul had been doing everything he could and more to keep them running for us for so long, but they finally died) so we bought a new Lenox furnace, a/c, and humidifier from Bel-Aire. Their installers were very good, explained everything, and they cleaned everything up when they were done. We were very impressed with the service and happy with the new system (and still are). Our only slight complaint is that we had a special filter unit installed when the new furnace was installed, and the filter costs $144 each time it is changed, which is every 1 to 1-1/2 years. It does the great job we wanted, but seems expensive when it comes time to change it. We knew of the added expense when we bought it tho.
At the same time we bought our new furnace, a/c, and humidifier for our home, we also reluctantly got a new furnace and a/c for our cottage north of Grand Rapids because we had had nothing but problems with our furnace up there for many years. We had used a different company for repairs to that furnace, but they could never fix it right over several years time, and it had cost us a ton on service calls, even tho it was still relatively new. The installers of the new Lenox furnace and a/c up there were okay but not as good as the ones at our house. So it obviously depends on what install crew you get. We have had no problems with the furnace or a/c up there since Bel-Aire installed the new furnace and a/c.
We have been very happy with Bel-Aire over the years. I believe they used to be Adex before, many years ago, and when they became Bel-Aire, our service contract just continued over to them and was honored by them also. When we had our old furnace at home, a few times it stopped heating, and a Bel-Aire serviceman was out right away and took care of the problem.
It started with what seemed like a really great sales pitch. We walked through the house and talked about my expectations and the fact that I do not tolerate heat well at all. We discussed the age of the house, the planned improvements, and the options on units. We were quoted $2600. It was a great deal!
Upon the 2nd walk-through the salesman noticed returns that appeared to not be connected. To simply reconnect those returns (that were later discovered to already be connected) was an additional $405! The layout man came in the next day and said that we really needed two returns on the 2nd floor, as well as two supplies on the 2nd floor. Tack another $780 on. The costs kept increasing
The day the installation was scheduled, the installer showed up. I asked him to please walk me through the house to show me exactly what was planned. We started in the guest bedroom, and I asked him to show me where the new supplies and returns were going. He looked at me blankly, and I asked him if he knew what was going on. His response- and quot; Not really, but they sent me with pictures so I should be goodand quot;.
While I was at work, my husband called to let me know the inspector came by to ask for the permit. The installers said that it has been pulled, but they didn't have it on them. I called the salesman who told me that they always pull the permit as soon as the contract is signed. At the end of the day they told my husband they'd be back the next morning to clean up and finish the registers.
Saturday morning comes and the install crew had not returned. My bedroom was a plaster-covered wreck from where they cut the new return. My guest bedroom had debris all over, and the closet was filthy. The basement was filled with sawdust, glue globs, and scraps from the unit installation. My first floor was a comfortable 72 degrees. My bedroom was 81! I figured there was an issue. I called the office, and they said nobody was scheduled to come back that day, or at all!
Thus began a week of phone calls of complaints. I was repeatedly told that it and quot;wasn't (their) problemand quot; that my room was and quot;as good as it would getand quot; and they even suggested buying a window AC unit to make my bedroom more comfortable. I DID NOT SPEND $3100 ON CENTRAL AIR TO STILL NEED A WINDOW UNIT. Despite the fact that I had purchased their and quot;service contractand quot; and I was now a and quot;preferred customerand quot; it took several for the install crew to come back out to and quot;troubleshootand quot; the issue. They never did end up cleaning their mess up.
On 8/3, the installer and salesman came back to and quot;troubleshootand quot; and look at adding another supply (at my cost). I called the permit office before they arrived and they told me there was no record of my permit. When Bel-aire arrived, I told them the permit office did not have a permit record, and they said to me once again that the permit was pulled the day I signed the contract. They gave me the confirmation number, and I called the development office once more. The woman found the permit, but told me it had been electronically applied for that morning, 16 days after the contract was signed, and 7 days after the job was and quot;completeand quot;. When I pulled the permit up myself, I noticed that they had pulled a permit for a and quot;replacementand quot; AC unit and no ductwork was included. After another call to the permit office to clear up issues, the inspector recommended I specifically ask bel-aire about the heat gain calculation, and the possibility of adding larger ducting off of the furnace. The salesman once again denied any wrongdoing, and told me that they didn't need to do a heat gain calculation, and that I didn't know what I was talking about.
After more argument, we finally were able to plan a route for another supply, and we were told to expect a call from their scheduler that afternoon. Before that call came in, I received a call from the salesman telling me that I had unreasonable expectations, and that they were done with the job, pending any issues with the inspection. I told him that the job was not completed to my satisfaction, and he said that they had done what they were supposed to, and it wasn't their problem, and again suggested getting a window unit. I once again brought up the lies they had told me about the work, the permit, and the clean-up, he told me stop calling him a liar and hung up on me.
That night, I noticed an unauthorized charge on my credit card for $1600 from Bel-aire. This was the amount due upon completion. As the house has not passed inspection and the work was not completed to satisfaction, the had not completed the job. They did not call and ask for payment method, nor did they inform me that they would be charging my card that evening.
I called Bel-aire on 8/3 to lodge a complaint. After speaking with what I assumed to be a supervisor, I have yet to hear back regarding the work that was not done nor have I received notice of an inspection date.
