John was most punctual in a geographical area not know for punctuality.  This cottage sits on Lake Michigan in Michigan's upper peninsula.  Some past contractors we have dealt with have operated on "U. P. time" , which is to show up a week or two later than initially planned.  John promptly called back and set an appointment to give an estimate of our roofing needs.  We made an appointment, John came and measured the job.  We stated we wanted a high quality job which we would not have to worry about from our home 3 hours away.  When the estimate was ready, John called and we met in a couple weeks when I was back to the cottage.  He offerred to re-roof the entire roof or simply a partial re-roof of the area which had been most abused by the winds, ice, and snow on the lakside. John described the job he was going to do and brought samples of the material he wanted to use.  He offerred to use a lesser grade of material at a lesser price.  We wanted a quality job and materials so  I agreed to the price for the better roof. I offerred to pay 50% up front or sign a contract.  John said a contractor "up here is only as good as his word and his reputation".  We signed nothing.  We shook hands and I prepaid nothing. Nothing!  He set a starting date for a few weeks later. John started exactly when he said he would, was done when he said he would be and the grounds were spotless of old materials and old nails. He saved me examples of the materials he used and even gave me the lumber yard's estimate of materials to him.  John is an honest man who gave me what I paid for.  I trust him and will use him again. He is a man of days gone by and I so appreciate his honesty and trust his recommendations.
