Nathan was polite, called me ma'me and acted like a good Christian boy. He said he could do our job for $3400. and could start the next day - should have been the first RED FLAG but I was recovering from surgery, on pain meds, and my judgement was definitely impaired. He asked for a 50% deposit and we gave him a check and he scheduled the start of service for the next day.
Next day: Nathan calls, says he has been up all night with his wife's dying grandma and can't work - he says that he has to get some rest. About 2 hours after that he calls and asks for cash as his bank won't release the check for several days and he has no money to buy supplies so he drove to our house and collected $1700. cash. But, he left and didn't work that day. IT WENT DOWN HILL FROM THERE.
I CAME HOME the next day and there was an open can of pain sitting on my wood dining room table, no cover on any of the furniture etc. When they left each day things were a mess. They spilled a can of paint on my carpet in one of my bedrooms. They painted the ceiling of the living room and there is paint covering the decorative hood top that holds the ceiling fan into the ceiling. All of the trim around the house has paint all over it, much of the old paint, especially on corners of walls is still visible from not being trimmed correctly. My brand new windows with wood stained trim are covered in paint. Nathan trimmed out our doors in the living room with trim that was too thin and didn't cover the plywood around the door which he admitted was bad and scheduled to come back the following Weds. to repair (he never showed and when I contacted him his response? "I forgot."
There is so much more I could say - oh, yes, this is important. Tape was applied to all the door trim etc to protect it, left on to long, and when removed all our paint on the edges of the trim was ripped off and NOT repaired so we now have more work to do with the sanding etc, and we are getting bids to repair everything that has to be redone which is most of the work.
We are filing a claim in small claims court because the day Nathan didn't show up to fix the problems, I contacted him and he was rude, threatened me (I have the text messages to prove it) and became very defensive and quite abusive scaring me enough that even if he would return I would be afraid he might hurt us. MOST UNFORTUNATELY after all was said and done I looked at the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and he has an F rating there with the same type of complaints. I feel like an idiot and one thing again in life I've learned is NOT to trust someone who sells there work laced in "I'm a Christian" and "I'm a perfectionist" (yes, he told us that the day he sold us his bill of "goods." AND......NEVER EVER hire someone on the spot without checking them out first!!!! I do have pictures of all the before/after and would be glad to share.
He was to check bathroom on a Saturday to make sure everything was ready for us to paint.
My husband and I painted the ceiling that Sunday. We were going to paint the walls on Sunday, however, the walls weren't sanded where the wallpaper was taken down.
I called him on Monday and it wasn't until that evening when we were ready to paint that one of his workers came. He was sanding even the walls that were suppose to be done and one area by light switch by entrance door was really bad and he said they would probably have to come back Tuesday and fix as no amount of sanding would help. There were a couple spots on ceiling that needed repair and he did sand those out. My husband and I left while worker was there and went to buy new stool. We were in no hurry to get back as was told they would be coming next day. When we got home, there was a note saying worker had talked to Nathan, owner, and he said we were to paint as he had to get job done as had a big job and need to put floor in. I called and left a message that at 7:30 at night was to late to paint and plus husband was going in at 5am for work. He left a message on my way to work the next day saying that he was putting the floor in as had to get it done. He was suppose to put floor in earlier in week but hadn't. I called him when I got to work and again he said he was coming that morning to tear out floor and start to put tile in. I told him I was not going to paint walls when the stool and vanity are in there. He said he work paint it then. I also mentioned about washer/dryer hard to paint after in then and again he said he would paint. I asked to make sure he was going to tear up old tile and he said yes. I came home early and found that more than half the floor was done and the old tile was still there. I asked him why tile was there and he said he talked to one of his construction buddies and he got some kind of paste that sticks to anything, so, using that. I didn't want to start something with his worker there so I didn't say anything but we had talked at least 4 times about taking up old tile and was written in bid that he would. I asked how much to deduct from bill since he didn't take up the tile and he said about $50 which was what the paste cost so offset each other. What could I say... He kept going on about how much work it was going to be to take up tile as was glued down to cement and it was only $50 and he was charging $750 for taking up tile and putting in tile? (we bought the tile and grout) We couldn't go into bathroom that night as couldn't walk on tile and he came and put in grout the next day. He called and said that they would be cleaning up everything and I asked him to look at like him and his wife would for amount of money we were paying. Also, they used our ladder to paint and white stuff like paste is all over his ladder and he said he would clean everything (detail work) Well, when I got home ladder wasn't clean - there was that white stuff all over carpet downstairs that wasn't coming up when I vaccummed earlier. He cleaned some paint off around shower, put still looked awful. There was brown paint on eggshell ceiling where they painted because he had to get done. The spot by door still looked awful which was suppose to be "an easy fix" The moulding he put in around tile looked likes like scraps and is warped - spots on walls that paint didn't cover. He said ran out of paint. We bought what he said we should need. Instead of painting everything good, he painted everything and everything needs to be touched up. He saaid he would be over that night as had payroll to meet. When he came that night to collect his last $875 I just wanted him out of here. He couldn't fix an easy fix a couple times and was evident that was all we were going to get from him. I told him about paint job etc and he brought in some paste and put over and hopefully it will look better. My bathroom still looks like that. My husband and I were going to paint etc but decided I should write everything here in case someone wanted to come and look at this disaster. Embarrasing right now. My son came over and could not believe the job that was done. I found out a few weeks ago that he didn't fasten vanity nor vanity top. Also, when they hooked up washer and dryer, it was hooked up wrong. hot on cold and cold on hot. He was to clean the hoses that had paint on them from their sloppyness but he didn't. My husband got new pipes on washer as was leaking. I thought I was smart using a construction company. The water damage ruined the main floor dining room and kitchen and living room and new tile and carpet is being put in first week of april as had trouble gettiing tile in and our work schedule. I think since the house was in bad shape due to all the damage and had stuff all around that he figured we weren't care. I feel as soon as he got the big job, he wasn't flexible anymore. Very disappointing to say the least and alot of money put into this investment that we don't have. The easy access to values ended up being a piece of wood that came from the garbage pile and screwed in and painted - the edges were so rough that when I mentioned it to him, a got a sliver in my finger. He didn't say anything and just started talking about something else.
