Once completed, found slab not level off by 2.5 inches to one corner. He agreed his guys screwed up. I needed more concrete work to connect the new garage to the old driveway. Joe & I shook Hands on a deal. I said I would pay for materials if he would perform the labor to have a complete driveway to the garage. He promised me he would have it done in the fall. no word from him. Called him in Florida said he would do it in the spring. He never did it. He does not keep his word. Do not trust him. Very untrustworthy.
SAY NO TO JOE & SONS!
Signed contract for new patio June 24, 2014. Changed mind and wanted mud jacking. Joe would not give refund. Said he already paid for permit. Joe called numerous times to schedule project, but I kept postponing. Finally, in late August, came home one Sunday and Joe had spray painted our patio with orange paint. Called him. He said ours was the next job. I had never agreed to a date at that point. Joe said paint would wash off. It did not. Called back a few days later and scheduled job for following week thinking we had paint on the patio and he paid for the permit. Later found out permit was only $45. Prior to start of work, I told Joe I would not pay him until I could see the job fixed our problem. During installation, Joe's foreman was in front of our home berating and swearing at one of the workers so loudly that my neighbor contacted me to ask what was going on. Patio completed September 5 and Joe asked for payment. Told Joe I wanted to see how it went in the rain. Joe was not happy. We had concerns about the job so we read the permit application and found we should have a base and 4 inches of concrete. We knew Joe did not put in a base and concrete appeared less than 4 inches. After several inspections city said we have to pay Joe because they cannot tell whether there is a base and how deep the concrete is. We finally cut two holes and found the patio is 2 and 3 inches. Still asking the city for another inspection. We are in litigation with Joe.
They did a good and careful job taking out the old cement and prepping for the new. They don't use huge trucks, so noise and traffic disruption were kept to a minimum. There was a problem with him getting cement on the day he wanted to pour; he said as they are a smaller company, they are lower in priority than some of the larger companies and they could not pour on the Friday that they had wanted. They did pour the following Monday. They did a beautiful job raking out the new cement. It looks great, and we've received many compliments from our neighbors walking by.
There were a few delays; getting the work scheduled, several days when the weather was chancy and no work was done, the extra weekend without a driveway when they couldn't get the cement. It took longer overall than we had expected, but we are very satisfied with the result.
Just a caution to anyone planning this work; be sure to either buy strips of sod for the side of the driveway/sidewalk, or plan on lugging around a lot of topsoil and reseeding your lawn next to the new cement. There was quite a lot of repair work to be done to the lawn afterwards; about 4and quot; wide and deep. We are still watering some sections of new grass almost two months later.
We would recommend Joe and Son's, but with the stipulation that you need to get on his calendar early in the season, and expect some delays in the process.
Since Joe has done work in Dearborn for 30+ years, I took his word and did it, living in Dearborn for more than 10 years now I know how picky they can be.
I would not hesitate to recommend Joe and his team to anyone looking to get concrete work done. They were fast, they cleaned up, and the price was more than fair.
