Pricing wise, John is very competitive. The work in general is quite good with some big caveats...
The problems come in with some corner cutting that has to be watched for. For example we paid for insulation in the basement, and he started to put up the walls without insulating it. If I was not home I would have not discovered this. Also he was paid to replace the poor insulation in the master bedroom ceiling, which turns out was not done, and was not discovered until it was already finished. Babysitting contractors isn't my thing. John isn't very punctual, and shows up at random times, and leaves at random times, and doesn't even show up some days. He's not very speedy - plan on double, even triple the 'estimate' given for project completion time.
Another problem is with his electrician named 'Melvin/Mel'. This has to be the most obnoxious, rude, sloppy, and arrogant contractor I have ever met. He complains the entire time on a job. After collecting money he didn't even return to finish additional work we were paying him for. We've since had to hire additional electricians to repair a lot of his work... Improper grounds, improperly installed GFI outlets. Improperly installed connectors to the outside box. Worse, we paid for a generator box outside, and he provided us with the incorrect plug, cord, and box. He also didn't bother to show up to test the setup after installing it so we never knew if it worked with our generator. Total cost to 'fix' the screwups from J Alband's electrical contractor? $537.00...
Despite our issues we had him give us an estimate on our kitchen remodel. He came down, gave us a price, and we decided to go with him on this - with the request that Melvin not set foot in our home. We agreed on a price, and set a projected start time to get things rolling. We never heard from him again, calls weren't returned, and he never showed up for any further appointments. We ended up retaining another contractor for the kitchen, and 'firing' J Alband. We have further work after the kitchen, but will no longer be calling him.
