However, due to their good work, we were willing to give them another try. I called today to get a one-time mowing job in June and was refused, with encouragement to discuss any long-term mowing arrangements. When I inquired if this refusal was retribution for this false billing from earlier this season, the secretary dummied up. Interestingly, when I called the secretary back via my cell phone (which she has just called to leave the "no" message), it went to voice mail. I called immediately back on a land-line phone, she answered immediately.
This vendor has poor communication processes, is not well-set for occasional lawn work, and appears to play games with potential customers. Work with them at your own risk. We are done with Atlas.
"We apologize for your inconveniences. I will be the first to admit that we don't do well with accommodating the "every now and then" mowing services. We have very tight routes that makes it difficult. If you ever decide to go on a weekly, consistent service basis, I will take great care of you as I know we can. We do appreciate the feedback."
The initial assessment was for much more work, but they worked with us when we asked to pare the project down to just one task for the time being. They gave us a fair price.
When they arrived to do the work, they assessed the project, planned it out, and went about their work quickly and efficiently. There was no standing around and the hole was filled quickly. They worked well with the roofing contractors that were here as well, no conflicts and they worked around the roofers materials.
Very pleased with the service and will definitely use them again.
Back in April 2014 my conversations with owner Sam Gembel went well. He seemed very knowledgeable about lawn care and he convinced me that he could bring my lawn back to life. I had great difficulty getting on the schedule but during that time Atlas was going through extenuating circumstances so I excused the poor responsiveness. The fungicide was applied April 30 and I promptly remitted payment. The top soil and seed was applied May 20. Atlas applied a seed/mulch in bag form. This was not what Sam told me he was going to do. When I agreed to the initial work to be done Sam said he was going to hydro seed the lawn. I called Sam immediately and he told me that the seed/mulch in bag was a better application because they could better control coverage. I wasn't entirely convinced but Sam said I would like the results so I agreed.
The results were pathetic. The top soil hardened like cement even with daily watering. In 2 weeks time the grass didn't grow. It really never started. My neighbors made jokes about it. On June 4 I emailed Sam and told him I was not satisfied. He agreed and promised to reapply top soil and hydro seed. In the meantime I withheld payment. On June 16 I spoke with Sam and asked when his crew would be out. My lawn was embarrassing. The next day June 17 Atlas showed up. This time they spread new top soil and sprayed hydro seed. I felt confident grass would be growing soon. I remitted payment immediately. Unfortunately we had severe rains the following day and all the seed washed away leaving only dirt. I emailed Sam and asked if he could do anything but no response. I didn't expect him to pick up all of the cost but I was hoping we could share in another application. After all Sam agreed the initial seeding was botched. Sam got his money and has not been heard from since. So much for good will and customer satisfaction. Sam is long on words but short on results. The following is taken from Atlas Outdoors web home page. Its clear ATLAS DOESN'T GET IT! As far as their Angies Super Service award, I can only assume Atlas customers have low expectations.

"The one and only email reply I received about the "seed washing out" after the 2nd application went in to my spam folder. Therefore I never saw it. A simple call to my cell or our office would have prompted an instant response. Especially if you were this upset. I apologize our services didn't work out for you. A refund of payment has been processed..."
"Thanks Angie! We are just getting started... We look forward to a long and prosperous working relationship!"
"Thank you for the business, (removed member name)!"
"Thank you for the feedback and business!"
"We greatly appreciate the feedback. We will definitely utilize this information moving forward to better improve on communication."
It went very well for me a lot of work for them but they did a great job and I will most assuredly contract with them for another year of maintenance!

First, it behooves me to be writing this...but, I know I use Angie's List and count on honest reviews. I really trusted Atlas when communicating with Sam Gembel by email. Let me say, I was very up front with him that I was fussy about my lawn. I paid Atlas $40 a time, which is more than I have paid anyone, anytime. But, I thought I was going to get a quality job. My yard is small 85 x 125 with much out of it for house and rock gardens. I live in a subdivision where, for the most part, owners take pride in their lawns. I know this has been a wet and saturated Spring. My lawn is thick and on a clay bed, which is slow to drain. But no worse than others this year. I had Atlas put a weed and feed on my yard, which was done too late for pre-emergent weeds, so my lawn has many maple saplings in it. The first time, May 1, that Atlas cut my lawn was fine....grass not thickened as yet. This third time their service was disappointing. I asked the grass to be cut shorter, so it would dry. Did not happen. When Tom and his assistant finished, their was mud tracks all over the lawn, instead of cutting short, the West side looked like a laid down grain field. The mower never touched the Maple seedlings. My rock gardens were not trimmed between the stones. There was a part on the East side of the house not cut. There was grass on my black mulch. All three mowings were cut in the same direction. The mower tore grass up at every zero turn.
I discontinued business with Mr. Gembel and am disappointed that he himself did not stop and see what I expected. Although he answered all my emails, by Iphone, it would be better if he would meet with the customer. Because a customer can no longer do yard work, doesn't mean he doesn't know how it should be done. I believe Atlas is excellent on larger properties or vacant lots. I really tried working with them.
"We are very sorry that it didn't work out. I just want to include a few items to point out. The "per service" mowing price was $30.00, not $40.00. We have had the rainiest spring that we have had in many years, so we have not had the most convenient weather conditions for proper mowing of such a small yard. Yes, we do have hand mowers which can be utilized if requested, but we have to charge extra if this is what our customers want. Again, my apologies that we were not able to work everything out. We wish you nothing but the best of services with your new service provider."
"Thank you (member name removed)... We look forward to another wonderful season."
Two workers came from Atlas Outdoors and power blew the leaves from my flower beds and corners of the house. They then gathered them up and took them away. I appreciated the fact that they did not shred them with mowers and leave them on the ground. At that point the acid from the leaves just go into the roots of the grass. Grass needs sweet soil.
The workers gave the yard a final mowing and a final cleaning up of straggling leaves. I was happy with the workers. I waited for 5 weeks for this to be done....and there were many nice days in between. I was anxious about that.
The workers were very courteous.
I was able to reach someone at Atlas by phone or email whenever I called to inquire. That is a big plus. I would like to be able to work with Atlas for total lawn care in 2014, but the price will be important also. Our flower beds were a mess. We just haven't been able to keep up with the weeds, overgrowth, etc. Bobbi, Rene and Rich arrived at around 8 a.m. and stayed until past 7:30. They didn't miss a thing, and even went so far as to transplant some of our flowers and plants to fill in the empty spots. They worked through a shower or two and never missed a beat.
Our yard looks fantastic, thanks to Atlas. We will absolutely call them again.
