If you want to avoid substandard work done at inflated prices, avoid CBR Plumbing and its one-man operator, Josh Ray. I called him in September 2008 to fix a blocked main line, and within hours of his visit, the drain began to give every sign of closing up again. After a video inspection by another company done with two days of Ray s visit, it turned out that the clog had not been cleared but an opening had been made by an auger in the plastic wall of the drain pipe. Fixing Ray s incompetence required excavating the line and replacing a section of the drain pipe. Needless to say, the remedial work was expensive. From start to finish, Ray failed in almost all aspects of the job. Here are a few memorable moments from his visit: Although assuring that he would come on an emergency basis, Ray showed up about an hour later than promised. I had given my address and driving instructions, but he called on his way over to tell me he had mistakenly gone to another neighborhood with a similar name. He proved resistant to providing an estimate of charges before beginning his work because he apparently could not tell what the job would require. I was with Mr. Ray during the entire time he was attempting to unplug the clogged drain. During this time, he talked non-stop about his golf match he had played in before coming to my house and his success, and gambling on holes. He was too busy bragging about how he had hustled his opponents to listen when told about the site of the drain problem. He consequently opened a clean out line unrelated to the problem, spilling waste water over the basement floor and wasting additional time. When he finally listened and opened the line to the septic tank, he promised to auger it three times. He augured it once and then proceeded to pack up his gear and leave. I was at his side the entire time he trying to clean out the drain so I witnessed his quick, dirty, and ineffective repair. After he was done, he left the place in a mess. I had to mop up the waste water he had spilled on the floor or left in five-gallon buckets. To sum up, Ray acted erratically, did not do the work promised, left the place in a mess, and charged more than double the normal rate for his service. His phone book ad notes that his rates can t be beat . That is true, but only in that his rates are higher than his competitors, and are charged for substandard work.
