I have worked with many contractors and I hate giving bad reviews. I fully support small businesses and want them to thrive in this home renovation market, but dealing with the owner (Tom) of this company and its partners was the worst experience of my life, so I have decided to take time to write this review so others know and avoid them. I called Tom - the owner of this company very well early in the season (in early March when the snow was still covered my driveway) to discuss about a $15,000 project that includes the installation of a concrete driveway, garage floor and some masonry jobs on my garage walls. This guy came over, gave me a quote and we agreed on a contract with a promise from Tom that my project would be the first thing he would work on as soon as the weather breaks. A month later, I tried to contact Tom again to find out when the project would start, just to find out that it had become extremely difficult to get a hold of him. He neither answered phone calls nor replied to my text messages. After leaving him a message threatening to cancel the contract, he texted back and told me he would send his partner over to discuss the jobs and start date. Daniel (Dan) - the guy that he sent over did his measurement (again), and told me he would like add another $3,000 for the project to continue. I told Dan that the contract had been signed and I was not at the point to re-negotiate it and all I wanted to know was the time frame when the work would begin. After failing to convince me to add more money, Dan agreed to do the job *immediately* and that I should have his words on it. Another 2 weeks went by, I tried to contact both Dan and Tom again, just to make sure everything was still on schedule. Again, no responses whatsoever from them for several days, then one day I got Dan s message where he said he would start the job on the weekend or Monday the following week. Needless to say, I was happy and hopeful. On Monday early morning, Dan texted me and told me he was gathering the materials and he was *on my way* (his words). So I called my manager to take a day off since I had to be home to keep the garage door open. HE NEVER SHOWED UP! More calls and texts unanswered for 2 days without any explanation, so I threatened to cancel the project (AGAIN) and, to my surprise, he called me right away to tell me he was sorry and would start the job soon. Two days later, a stranger called me and told me he was a freelancer and was sent over by Dan who did not tell him (the freelancer) exactly what to do. I told my wife, who was home at that time, to show this guy the contract and he was surprised about the work. So he tried to call Dan who did not reply him either. Not sure what to do next, the freelancer left. Feeling I could not trust this company anymore, I texted them to tell them I canceled the contract. This was my only option, knowing that it would be difficult to find a replacement company as at this point of the year (near mid-May), as most of the concrete contractors are already busy and unable to take more jobs. I do not understand why United Construction screwed me up this way. They probably signed too many contracts than they could handle, or it is their practice to just sign as many contracts as they can, then sell the jobs to other contractors for some quick money. Whatever they try to do, this is a very bad practice so if you want to get your renovation jobs done in high quality and in a timely manner, you should not hire this company. These guys have serious communication problem. They will guaranty to screw you up and leave you deal with the consequences of their actions. When questioned about his business experience, Dan said he and Tom have been in the concrete business for 17 years, but I really doubt that judging from all the comments in Home Advisor.
