I have previously been a successful business owner and I know first hand about positive customer relations... All communication from my end as a customer was calm and respectful - guaranteed.
I will admit that I did not ask for an estimate when I dropped the motor off for this work... In retrospect, this was a huge mistake!
When I dropped off the motor on July 30, the owner said he was real busy. I told him I was heading to Canada on Aug. 10 but would like it before then, preferably Aug. 7. This gave him 9 days including the day it was dropped off. He wrote '8-7-13' on the top of the work order. He did not say he couldn't get it done. He did not decline the work.
I called three times to find out how the work was progressing and left messages Aug. 5, 6, and 7. Their answering machine clearly states to leave a message and the call would be returned. I never received a response.
I drove up there (34 mile round trip) at 3:30pm (they close at 5pm) of the day it was to be done. The owner's remarks were sarcastic and condescending. He found that a needed thermostat gasket was not available and he would need to make one. He mentioned nothing about the impeller, so I asked if that part of the job was done. He stated that another guy was working on it. I could see the motor, no one was working on it, and it was exactly as it had been left when dropped it off.
He promised to call me by 9am the next day. He did, at 10:36am, to say the job was done. Bear in mind that at 3:30pm (they close at 5pm) the previous day, it had not been started. By 10:36am (they begin at 9am) the next day, it was done.
The most time spent according to their admitted and published hours was 3 hrs. In calling 3 other similar businesses, the longest time estimate was 2 hours. After the fact, I called these same businesses and received rough estimates ranging from $135 to $250. My bill indicated FOUR hours of labor... AT $65 PER HOUR - total bill was over $325! The bill also indicated a gasket with a factory part number. This contradicts what he told me the previous day about not being able to get a gasket and having to make one.
The owner was not present when I picked up my motor. The guy who did the work was there and rang up my bill. When he saw what the owner had written on the bill, he remarked 'Wow!' Now why would the guy who did the work be surprised at the bill?
Due to the fact that my fishing trip was delayed a day already, I was desperate to get going, so I paid the bill and hit the road.
The  owner seemed to be doing the exact opposite of what one would do to cultivate a good business relationship and reputation. He was very disrespectful and talked as if I was an idiot. (I am a professional educator and owned and operated a similar business for 15 years in the '80's and '90's)
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH BEAR LAKE MARINE! I feel I was ripped off.
