They helped me pick out my carpeting. Merkle Furniture and Merkle Carpet One are owned by the same company, they are in different locations. Carpet One is in Ann Arbor. They had interior designers that helped me, her name was Cecilia. She was wonderful and came out to our house and helped us. Merkle Furniture had the displays and Carpet One did the installation. They worked hand in hand.

Hardwood flooring installation was done poorly. Lumps in floor and there are a number of areas where the sub floor wasn't adequately done. Merkel refused to remedy situation and tried to site other reasons for the horrible install. They basically said we don't care and since you already paid you can go ahead and sue us if you want. Lack of integrity and accountability if you ask me. Simple jobs are simple for a reason but you really judge a company on how they respond to issues and in this case they did not pass the test, shame on them.

I worked with Scott; he was very responsive about doing the estimate and scheduling the work. The install was quick and well done. I thought the price seemed a bit high, but the materials are good quality and the work was done well.

I'd become the recipient of a piece of carpeting and needed an installer. Scott at Merkel was available to help me out and he set up a time to install the carpet. He did a great job! It was supposed to be a simple rectangular install but we discovered that the carpet was a foot too short on one side. He was able to piece the remnant from the fireplace cut out, and crafted it together to add the extra foot that was needed. When he was done, the seams were all but invisible! It ended up costing a little extra but the workmanship was worth every penny. The room looks terrific! Thank you, Scott and Merkel Carpet One!

The salesperson was excellent and really qualified us for the right products, although the installation and follow up was awful. The hardwood is where the issues continue to persist. The installation was rushed on day 2 and the finished product was poor. After indicating that I thought the flooring looked to be installed poorly I was assured by the installers that it was done perfectly....well it was not, we have converging boards in a number of areas, spacing of boards wildly inconsistent, and not to mention a complete dismissal of fixing the problem. After inspections and other contractors examined the work, all concluded the install was done poorly. After 18 months we still are unresolved and Merkel refuses to remedy the situation. Merkel is a local company so I decided to go with them, but they don't stand behind their work and try to point the finger at everyone but themselves. My advice is to shop around for the best product but think long and hard before you have them install anything, if you do, don't pay them until you are happy, because once they've been paid they are done with you.
Response from Merkel Carpet One Floor & Home
"Mr. [member name removed], I am sorry that you have had so many issues with your wood floor that we installed in your home April of 2013. We at Merkel Furniture and Carpet One have had a long standing relationship with our customers, and do everything within our power to make sure that the products we install are of the best quality, and our installation department is second to none in Washtenaw County. That said, once the material is installed, it is up to you to maintain the floor to the guidelines that are prescribed by (in your case) the National Wood Flooring Association. There are certain guidelines in which to follow in order to keep your wood floor from having problems due to physics and nature. Wood floors are a natural product that expand and contract due to atmospheric conditions present inside your home. Too much moisture, and your wood floors expand. Too little moisture, your wood floors contract. This winter was one of the worst winters on record for low temperatures and dry cold air. Everyone's wood floors took quite a beating from the inside dryness that compounds the situation in the heating of your home. Almost all of the new thermostats on the market today have a meter to show the moisture content in the home, so monitoring that is essential in maintaining a proper humidity level, both summer, and winter. Your wood floor was inspected in March by an accredited, independent inspector and our installation was not only found to be satisfactory, it was shown to be without any flaw whatsoever. The inspectors findings were that the moisture levels in the home were half of what the normal range should be, and that is what caused the problems. The other issue is that you did not choose to believe an unbiased independent report and took it upon yourself to contract another flooring installer to make "repairs" to your wood floor, replacing boards that were gapped due to low moisture. When the moisture returns (as it always does in the higher humidity months of June, July, and August) the new boards were not acclimated to the existing dryer boards, resulting in expansion of approximately 1/8" per board. when you get 20 new boards expanding at that 1/8"rate, problems ensue. Just do simple math and you will see.(1/8"=.125 inches per board x 20= 2.5 inches of expansion displaced over a 25 foot span). I have witnessed personally the power of wood floors pushing walls off concrete foundations, so this behavior is well documented. Listening to your wood flooring contractor, adhering to the laws of physics, and doing your part to maintain your investment is always prudent advice. As for your wood floor, if you hadn't listened to people that know very little about wood floors, and had you not "repaired" the areas that nature would have (and did) repair for you, your wood floor would be perfect right now, and you wouldn't feel the need to slander us on a public medium. I wish there were something that we could do for you to reverse the flooring problem you have created, but it would require removing the wood floor and starting over. For the many people who may be reading this, please beware of taking the advice of novice installers, or inexperienced trades."

They did a great job. My consultant/salesman was Scott and he was very helpful and preofessional. The work was done on time and it looks great. I think I could have spent less for a similar product from Lowe's, however I needed more and quot;TLCand quot; to get the project done and Scott helped me with each step--definitely satisified!

We bought a new house and needed to repace the carpeting throughout the entire house. Our salesperson Debbie was exceptionally knowlegable on every brand of carpet, and was able to help us find exactly what we were looking for. Every aspect of Merkel's service was exceptional - from the salesperson, to the measurer to the installers. Everyone was very helpful with questions, and extremely competent. We absolutely love our carpet and have had many compliments from people who have been in our home. I would definitely use Merkel's again and would recommend them to anyone looking to buy carpet.

Installers arrived at the time specified, moved very quickly and did an excellent job. Very polite, professional and efficient. Installation went exactly as planned with the expected amount of carpeting and seams where they were supposed to be. Outstanding seaming with this patterned carpet. Wouldn't know it was there if I hadn't seen them do it.
