I was dog sitting my sister's lab and chihuahua when I discovered the remains of a chocolate cake on the floor on a Sunday night before a big snow storm. It was obvious from the lab's behavior that she had eaten most of the cake, but I was unsure how much the chihuahua or my own shih tzu mix had eaten. I called the Emergency Veterinary Hospital because they were the closest vet to me that was open on a Sunday night and explained the situation. After reading the cake ingredients they said I should bring all three dogs in right away because there was a potentially lethal amount of three different ingredients and even a small amount of cake to the smaller dogs could be trouble. Once we arrived, they immediately took the lab into the back to get her to vomit as her stomach was clearly distended. They checked the vital signs of the other two dogs for signs of chocolate poisoning. The chihuahua showed no signs so they didn't even charge me for him at all. The shih tzu vomited some chocolate so they sent me home with activated charcoal for him. The lab stayed overnight and they gave her fluids and and charcoal. My sister called late in the night and they gave her updates on her dog. I picked up the lab the next morning and she as well as the other dogs were fine. Emergency vet service is always expensive, but I was grateful that they were open even during a snow storm and the prices were better than my experience with an emergency vet in MA.
