They set up a laser level on the concrete pad and calculated the depth for the trench they would have to cut in the lawn to provide positive drainage, and began to strip off the grass and vegetation. As Rob pulled away the tall grasses from the edge of the pad, the water that began to flow from under the slab was truly spectacular. Using the bucket of the excavator, he pulled out old squashed perforated drainage tubes that had been laid in below the edge of the house, revealing them to be full of silt from the 22 years they had been doing their job. The water poured into the excavation, and as he dug deeper, it filled in until there was a moat at the edge of the pad, flowing toward the stone wall and the intended outflow down the hill to the river. Because of the extreme flow, it was urgently necessary to widen the opening at the stone wall, and the stones were lifted out and laid aside to reuse.
It was clear as the excavation progressed that the trench was going to have to be deeper and wider than had been initially projected. As they worked, Dana assured us that they would charge us only the additional cost of the rip-rap that would be needed to fill the trench, once the pent-up flow of water had slowed. Eventually the flow did slow and finally stop, and filter fabric was laid in the bottom of the trench and covered with a deep layer of large-stone rip-rap from the local quarry.
The only issue that did occur was that the blasting at the quarry made it necessary to get the stone from a further source, but the given that, the project was still completed very efficiently, and the final result is a very neat swath of stone, approximately 6 feet wide between the house and the lawn. Additionally, Rob very carefully placed the stones from the disassembled wall onto the edge of the filter fabric, creating a neat channel for the water to flow down into the new drainage area.
Because it was November, and there was already snow in the air, we were not concerned with landscaping the area, but Rob backed the excavator up the hill out of the yard, smoothing the bare dirt behind him, and we broadcast seed that should germinate once the snow goes away and the weather improves. The look of the yard when it was complete was both rustic and yet careful, and we look forward to see how the vegetation will grow in the final version of the back yard.
