What a big job these 2 had to do. The roof was rotting where it had been leaking, and it had 3 layers of shingles in someplaces, and 4 layers of roofing in other areas. They just kept moving it off the roof and hauling it away. The roof was repaired, boards replaced, and then a 1/2 inch CDX plywood installed over it all for good measure. Ice stuff at the drip edge, and tar paper the rest of it, and a decent shingle provided by Morse Lumber right here in Wells, and FREE delivery! along with that plywood as well. They used that new pvc white along the clapboards, at roof edge because the old clapboards had rotted away. It looks good, but we need an inspection done on this work, it looks awkward where the addition meets the farmhouse roof. The weather was rather warm, and no fun at all, but day after day, with a few days off due to rain, and then they were back at it and finished. OK, so Yesterday !!! we had the Hurricane Sandy, (this is MAINE) and winds that seemed like they were going to tear off the roof -- but these were installed with 5 nails per shingle -- I was told it would hold up to high winds. it held up to gusts estimated to have been 50-60 mph. The area around the chimney leaked. When we were out in the old pantry end, the wall is damp where water came in under the window above the roof. While some days varied as to hours worked, they were here working when weather was good, and kept at it, so we gave them an A for punctuality..... but we have issues.
Description of Work: We own a 200 year old house and it has some real headaches. One was a leaking roof, and D & R Builders also known as Dan Pepoon were recommended to us. Roof required removal, clean up, and new shingles. With weather it could take a week or two to get it done, and to keep us dry at the same time. The roof looks good, but there are issues, and they include leaking around the chimney. the flashing is too short and does little to protect the roof. UPDATE: The roof leaks around the chimney, and the soffit trim or the boards under the roof line - is missing on the back - the north side of the house. Cold air comes into the house from this, and we have to hire someone else to replace it, because they don't do that kind of work. The flashing is choppy along the edge of the old shed, and rain came in under and around the window which looks out over this roof. The area isn't done right at the top of the roof pitch, and we will have to have someone else come and repair it. Where the building meets the wall on the West side, is a weird, and yes, we have to have another professional come in and fix it-- sort of bump where they couldn't figure out how or what to do, and it's covered with LEAD -- chimney flashing to cover up the work. There is plenty or room for hornets to move in, and that is the one thing that we specifically mentioned would be very bad-- since I am highly allergic to them. The boards used along the "rakes" or clapboards on the other wall do not end in a vertical position, but just awkward. They also have gaps, where they did not cut the boards to accommodate a secondary roof pitch change, but simply bowed the board to make it look good -- which from a distance you can't tell -- so that will have to be repaired. We also asked them if they could repair the very nice 1800's trim on the north end of the roof. They put spray foam -- which bulged out and looks orange and hideous, and that was how they took care of the hole in the roof trim. The other 2 holes they didn't even bother with. Our Advice: ALWAYS inspect the work done, even if you are afraid of being on the roof. My husband at 69 said he would rather hire someone to inspect it, and so it waited more than 30 days, so there is little we can do -- or will do, We don't hire back anyone who does this quality of work and that means we have to hire someone else to come repair it.
