The contactor would frequently forget details that were clearly documented in the specification sheet.
Abandoned the project after escrow without resolving a lengthy defect list or completely fulfilling the terms of the specification sheet.
Misrepresented ownership of the road the house was built on as a public road, when in fact it turns out to be private and maintained by the contractor. This past winter the road was rarely plowed and never salted. The one time any kind of material was spread on the road for ice it was pure beach sand - no salt - which promptly washed away and provided little to no traction enhancement and had no effect on the sheet of glare ice which was the driving surface.
Purposefully ignored a mistake by the electrician which required 400' of underground power cable to be dug up and replaced. Local town inspectors overlooked this and other code violations and refuse to get involved with complaints.
The stick work seemed tight, but fit & finish work was totally botched.
Garage doors were hung improperly resulting in them basically falling off the rails and ripping up the seals around the doors.
Water tests came back with high arsenic, and the spec sheet was pre-loaded with a minimalist filter system "just in case"
Closing was delayed multiple times and the house was delivered 4 months late unfinished.
Shards of metal trimming, nails and screws strewn all around the house and driveway were described as "standard stuff" and despite numerous promises were never cleaned up. It was a significant safety hazard to our pets and children and resulted in vehicular tire damage.
Interior painting was left unfinished and a promised follow-up paint job never occurred.
Despite very specific heating and appliance brands and models being detailed on the spec sheet, the contractor substituted low end alternatives.
The contractor claimed to be ignorant of such "rare" concepts and central air, pocket doors and electrical conduit.
The end result was a potentially nice house delivered unfinished by the contractor who simply didn't respond after he got his money.
out experience is NOT unique - strongly recommend talking to folks living with houses they built - they all have horror stories.
