I immediately called Mr. Muller, and let him know I was not pleased. He explained the problem was with my overhead oil lines. I responded that I’ve lived here 24 years, and the only problem I ever had was a month ago, and today — after he’d supposedly “fixed” it. Mr. Muller said it wasn’t like that $110.50 went right into HIS pocket… I responded that I understood how a business operates, but that the $110.50 does come out of MY pocket… and was I paying for a job he had “fixed” four weeks ago.
Mr. Muller went on to say that the air bubble problem could come back at any time, and he can’t send people out to work for free. (If he fixed it right the first time, maybe it would be another 24 years before it happens again?)
Suffice it to say I will file a complaint with Better Business Bureau, state regulators, town code enforcement officials… and I’ll re-post here if Mr. Kurt Muller eventually decides he should stand behind his work.
I paid $150.00 to fix the problem; I should NOT have to pay another $110.50 for Muller to re-do their own work!
(And good luck getting me to spend that $2,600.00 he estimated for the new oil tank!)
of his work and service. No longer! He has gotten too busy, perhaps, and now has others do the work he used to do.
Unfortunately, he has allowed some incompetent people to undermine his standards.
Back in May when my kitchen faucet spray hose developed a leak, I called and asked for him to come out and take a look, as well as check out two other problems I’d been having for a while. His receptionist said he no longer did the work himself,
but that another plumber would come out. The plumber who came (May 30) fixed one of the problems (replaced some toilet
parts), but did nothing with the faucet except to leave a note saying the whole unit needed to be replaced, but not saying what
was actually wrong with it (to me it seemed like only a washer or gasket was needed, as I had experimented with a different spray hose I had, and it seemed fine). He never even addressed the other problem (hot water in the cold pipes).
When I got home (I was supposed to meet him there, but he was gone before I arrived), I found his note, a leaking valve under the kitchen sink, and the new toilet parts installed but insufficiently flushing. I also found the side entrance door to the
garage left open, the lights in the bathroom and bedroom left on, and plumbing supply plastic wrappers on the floor.
I called Muller that same afternoon to voice my concerns (leaving out the last three items – it seemed petty at the time). His other receptionist said they could come back to address the leak and complete the other jobs within a day or two. Needing the faucet, I agreed.
When he returned (June 3), he replaced the entire faucet unit (costing about $500!!), fixed the toilet flow, installed a new mixer valve on the furnace ($100) to correct the hot/cold issue, and suggested repairing a cutoff valve to the toilet at a substantial cost due to how long it would take to “bleed the whole system.”
The faucet did work well (at $500 it damned well should!) though I’m still convinced it didn’t need total replacing (you’ll see why shortly). The toilet worked well. However, the hot water was still bleeding into the cold water line, and that was annoying, especially after two visits. So I called Muller again after receiving the bills for the first two visits. The first receptionist said she’d relate the message to Kurt (July 1), but no one ever called back.
Three weeks later a second notice bill arrived, and I once more called. This time I spoke to a third receptionist
(July 23); I told her I would not be paying until the work was completed. That afternoon Kurt Muller came by to assess the situation.
He fairly quickly determined that the problem was something other than the mixer valve his plumber had installed; it was a
defective shower valve in a master bathroom. He also suggested repairing the cutoff valve for the toilet, as it would
only take a few minutes once the water main had been shut off. I told him his plumber had inaccurately diagnosed both those issues, and had even “repaired” the one by installing an unnecessary mixer valve on the furnace. (This is why I believe the original sink faucet never needed replacing entirely – it was a misdiagnosis and the simplest fix he could think of.) Kurt agreed to send the guy back one more time to correct the problem with hot/cold bleeding and do the easy repair of the toilet valve. He also said the plumber would check out the source of the problem (the master shower) and fix it if possible (Kurt seemed to think it just needed a valve or gasket.) This work would be done free of charge in exchange for the time and cost of the misdiagnosed and unnecessarily installed mixer valve on the furnace. I agreed. When I mentioned my earlier frustration about
getting through with messages, he informed me that he didn’t always get the messages that were left, implying his stable of receptionists were not always able to keep all the communication straight. He seemed a little peeved that I assumed he had not taken responsibility for calling back; instead, as I said, he suggested that he didn’t always get the messages. (Whatever.)
Three days later (July 26), the original plumber returned for a third time to install some new cutoffs to the master shower, replace the faulty toilet valve, and look at the master shower unit itself. He completed the first two jobs in less than an hour (remember his original estimate had been it would take several hours just for the toilet valve), thus taking care of the hot/cold bleeding, finally. He then proceeded to take apart the shower faucet from the wall of the shower. When he had it in pieces on the shower floor, he told me he couldn’t replace the needed parts, and said he’d have Kurt call me back with some options. Then he left.
I never heard from Kurt. We called him twice in the next two weeks, and were assured the messages got through to him. But there still hasn’t been an answer – and the shower faucet is still sitting in pieces on the shower floor, just below the hole in the shower wall where it used to be.
"Dear [member names removed], Thank you for taking the time to communicate to us why our service did not meet your expectations. Feedback is always appreciated. After assessing your review of services regarding your toilet, hot water/cold line, shower issues, and concerns of pricing for the repairs, I wish to address some of your concerns. Pertaining to repairs rendered, and estimates given for possible scenarios of repair - an estimate is given, to include worst case scenarios. Generally, jobs are done by our company based on time and materials. It is my intention to be cautious, in case something turns out to be more complex than can sometimes be the case. Not all plumbing and heating work is created equally, and different equipment and scenarios take more or less time, dependent on the specifics which can only be ascertained once you are in the midst of the job. I try my best to ere on the side of caution, so that we can give you all the information that is pertinent to your possible repair. If a repair takes less time and parts to correct – we will charge accordingly. You would not be charged the full amount of an estimate, should it require less time to complete. I certainly understand your frustration in regards to the cost of plumbing and heating repairs, but our cost is not out of line with the standards of the industry, and more importantly – allows us to stand behind our work, and warranty the parts, in most cases – longer than the manufacturer would warranty for. The quality of the equipment we utilize does come at a higher cost than what you would find available at “box stores” and subsequently is of a higher quality than what you will find readily available at a “box store.” Please also consider all the logistics involved in having a licensed and insured professional install or repair something at your home – travel, delivery, labor, etc. And please let me remind you of the times we were at your properties and have not charged you. I charge only when I feel it is warranted to do so. Please note that on several occasions I have tried to return your phone calls, but unfortunately a number of times the contact window was confined based on your availability. I understand that it can be frustrating to play phone tag, but as you understand your own busy schedule, I can only assume you understand how difficult it can be to sync up several schedules at once in order to be in contact. I want to offer my apologies for the communication delay. Also, please note – that while frustrating, unfortunately there are many parts that can sometimes be difficult to locate, or come from afar that must be ordered. This takes time. We ask for your patience while we try to locate what your current need calls for. We apologize for any inconveniences that may be caused by these delays, but often times it is out of our control. Because you have been a long time customer, since 2006, I wanted to make sure I gave my full attention to review your complaint. According to all of our records, and even previous reviews, we believed you to be a satisfied customer. Based on the dissatisfaction stated in your review, we respectfully request you no longer contact us to provide service at your residence. We believe this is best for both parties based on the detailed Angie’s List complaint. Thank you, Kurt Muller Muller Heating & Plumbing 207-883-0148"
