We were buying a home north of Portland, and the home inspector mentioned that he saw signs of mice in the insulation throughout the house. His impression was that this had been ongoing for years, and that the insulation smelled musty as a result. But we loved this house. Our realtor called Advantage Pest Control for us to survey the premises, and we appreciated their quick response and excellent analysis of the problem. In addition, they had a solution in hand that could be embarked on immediately once we closed on the property. Richard Varney and his team were a 10/10. They agreed with the home inspector, and gave us an estimate to remove all of the insulation throughout the house, reinstall insulation to code, and close-up any openings found throughout the house including the foundation and roof. The team was meticulous. Rich led an experienced insulation removal and installation crew, and they were excellent. Totally cleaned up everything, and did an exceptional job, including opening up knee walls and dormer attic that had been sealed to access embedded insulation. At the conclusion of the project, we had insulation that exceeded code (for a small cost on top of the estimate), a house that smelled perfect, and bait positioned around the frame of the house and in knee walls to prevent further outbreaks. We also purchased a maintenance program for a year to ensure all of our needs were cared for. We most highly recommend Rich and Advantage for an pest control needs that you may have.

He warned that it could take up to 30 days to see results but we stopped seeing live ants the day after he sprayed. So worth it!

Mike came out on a Sunday!!! Spent 90 minutes checking every corner of every surface of every piece of furniture I was concerned about. Even lifted up a bed to check the boxspring of a mattress I was concerned about. Then HELPED ME SWEEP underneath it!!! Operated with the precision of an ex-military perfectionist. Good, warm-hearted, personable man, obviously busy, but generous with his time and EXCELLENT quality of education that he offered me. Luckily, I happened to ask if he also did any handyman work (he does!), so I could benefit from more (incredibly well-priced) help from this fastidious man. Hire him! (But not so much that he is too busy for me next summer!!!)

As a new customer, I was impressed with the professionalism and courtesy of the front office. I originally called a different exterminator and was connected to a computer generated menu of voicemail prompts that were so annoying I hung up. With Advantage, the phone was personally answered immediately and I was able to get an appointment to suit my schedule. The crew showed up on time and took care of my wasp issue completely. I will definitely use them again with any other issues and highly recommend this company.

Successful. Complete. Guaranteed with a five-year partnership. Richard Varney personally was the lead of our bat exclusion process. Under his exceptional skill, experience, professionalism, warm personality and hard work, he finally excluded bats from our home. We are into the 3rd summer with no signs of bats. His approach was multi-step and thorough. In the first phase, he worked with a team of professionals to assess the possible locations and patterns where bats had been breeding for possibly 20 years. The problem was way beyond an occasional bat in the home. We had regular bats showing up in the warm season, every night entering and existing, and guano as the morning evidence of their regular presence. Richard Varney was a partner to the general contractor, the roofing experts, and our family. He was present for a smoke test to find the obvious areas in the roof where bats may be entering. We had a major task to assess if a total removal of our roof (only 25 years into what was estimate as a 50-75 year roof) was the last resort to address the chronic bat problem and the ethics of how to handle a potential bat colony. Richard took the information and then methodically set one-way doors for the bats to leave, and painstakingly sealed the areas suspected as entry points. He also used extensive netting and checked the roof regularly every season. He gave us a 5-year guarantee. In addition to the excellent results, Richard was the most available and communicative contractor we have ever met. He returned calls, texts, emails in lightening speed. He was seamless in his scheduling, checking in, reporting back and keeping in touch. Never have we had a professional in the field of home development, construction, maintenance and care with such exceptional communication and professional skills. We also use him for our standard extermination services, and even there, we have had less mice, ants, pantry moths and unwanted visitors than ever before. We give him our highest recommendation possible.

Richard Varney of Advantage Pest Control in South Portland, ME is the only pest control service who has ever been able to get rid of the squirrels that had made a nest in the under eave closet of my old house. In the past four years I have had THREE different companies come and charge me a good deal of money (i.e. $750.00; $950.00 and $1500.00 respectively) and did not eradicate the problem at all. The first time was three years ago and the squirrels did stay gone for a while but they were back this Thanksgiving when the last two services were employed and did nothing except take my money.
Richard Varney did things differently than any of these other companies and that is why he is the best. What he didn’t do was just stick a trap up on the roof and expect the squirrels to waltz in it after a few days but no longer than five . . . Both companies said they would seal the holes so there would be no way the squirrels could get back in and both were wrong – they did.
Richard came to my house, every day, for over three weeks before he was sure they were out and gone. He trapped the adults but there were still babies. He is the only one I know that put foam in the holes first . . . and then waited to see if it remained or was pushed out – indicating that there was still activity. He built a rest for a trap on the side of the house, because that was where it was needed.
He is also the nicest, kindest man I’ve met in this business. I was devastated when the previous company allowed a trapped squirrel to die of exposure on my roof during a severe rainstorm. I called and asked them to please come and get it before it died, and they said, “All their technicians had gone home” . . . and it died a horrible, slow death.
Richard was just the opposite. As soon as I texted him that there was a squirrel in the trap, he was on his way over. He cares about both his clients and the animals he needs to trap.
You will get no better than RICHARD VARNEY and ADVANTAGE PEST CONTROL. They were simply the only ones in over three years and four companies that could actually do the job they promised. I urge you to contact Advantage Pest Control for any of your future needs.

We bought the $700 package, which has them come back as many times as they need to of the pests returned. It was worth every penny, and that's not easy for me to say. We live in a log cabin, and the carpenter bees and ants LOVE our house. We had several treatments and they were true to their word. We are scheduling them again this year.

Mr. Varney carefully removed the aluminum soffits of our home because we saw what we thought were feces from flying squirrels. Mr. Varney then set traps in the soffit area to catch whatever might be producing the droppings. He returned in a few days to check the traps. He found no evidence of any new infestation. He carefully replaced the soffits. As it turned out, the droppings were from a prior infestation and were just now filtering their way to the soffits. While he was at our home, he sealed up all of the small openings through which flying squirrels might enter.
We are so pleased with the work which Mr. Varney and his crew did. He was quick to respond to our call. He arrived at the appointed time. He gave us an estimate of the cost. He was courteous and his work was neat and professional. At the initial meeting, he carefully explained what he would do and he went over the schedule for completing the job. He did everything he said he would do.
And here's the almost unbelievable part: when he completed his work, he charged us much less than what he had initially quoted! He explained that the job required less work than he had originally thought it would require. When was the last time a professional contractor did that?! This is definitely a man of integrity!

Amazing service and responsiveness. Very professional. Provided education on habits of hornets, explained that the problem could take care of itself over the next month due to cold weather. provided options. Viewed the job in the morning and was there that afternoon to do the work.
