Ed made the job easy because he's trustworthy, skilled, and dedicated to meeting the customer's requests.
I live in California and used Angie's List to find a painter for my mom's house in Maine. Ed had super reviews so I gave him a call. I had confidence in him from the start. He's an excellent communicator and listener. He understood what was involved and followed through on everything promised. And...he was easy to get hold of.
His painting estimate was more than fair (lots more scraping and caulking than anticipated) as were the costs for the other items.
Before Ed could begin I found out the house had water problems: the roof, fascia, and gutters had to be replaced (by another company). Meanwhile, Ed went beyond the beyond by giving me his observations about the water outside and in the basement. In part, because of his input, the water situation was solved, as well.
After watching mom exit the front door one day, he asked about adding a handrail for her. He did and she was grateful for his concern.
The painting was completed a bit before schedule.
I hired him to caulk all my windows, paint the trim on my multi-dormered house, and paint/save my porches.
I had wondered if my porches needed replacement instead of just paint. They were so hurt by last winter's frost heaves. He figured out a way to save their integrity and bolstered their footprints so that they are beautiful!
The trim job is wonderful. The house was new-construction when I bought it in 2010 and it now looks better than new! Ed also did some major work building footings for a side porch that was so important to me.
Ed also pointed out potential problems, as he discovered them, so that I would be aware of things to look for with respect to any infrastructural issues. I was so thankful for his input!
One of the best experiences I have had since settling in Maine. Thank you, Ed Goodfriend.
CONSTRUCTIONIST, CRAFTSMAN, FINISH CARPENTER AND GENERAL CONTRACTOR. ED IS
KNOWLEDGEABLE, PROFESSIONAL, PUNCTUAL, RELIABLE AND HONEST.
HE ALWAYS GOES BEYOND AVERAGE AND THE OBVIOUS. HE ALWAYS SEEKS PERFECTION .
I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM.
"Just to clarify the member's comments. I explained I do not do fiberglass doors and why. I then tried to offer some advice on who might be able to help her. I told her that if I was to do anything with the door it would be to paint it as I thought that would last longer over time based on my experience. However, I mentioned I was booked and would not even be able to do that until next spring. She commented she really wanted the fiberglass door restained anyway. Not sure why that deserves a grade... let alone a B. I try to be conscientious and help whenever I can, even if I am not able to do the work."
First, the finished product is amazing. It looks like we have a brand new kitchen with high-end dark wood cabinets. Ed took our standard oak cabinets and made them something special. He painted a brown-black color over our existing oak cabinets (we picked the color, with input from Ed, from a batch of different black colors). He took the cabinet doors back to his shop and painted the cabinet frames in our house. We've had the kitchen a few months now and the paint is holding up great, even in places where I've accidentally dinged the cabinet by pulling something out too fast. Everyone who has seen the cabinets compliments us, and one person thought we had bought new cabinets and didn't realize that it was paint over the old ones.
Second, Ed was great to work with. He promptly returned calls, showed up on time, and let us know when he had to reschedule work on one day. He and his assistant were friendly and pleasant. They left their work area clean and gave us clear instructions on when the paint would be dry, etc. I felt comfortable having him in my home. I know he doesn't often work in Scarborough, so I'm glad he was willing to come down to help us out with our kitchen.
Third, Ed's price was reasonable. I did not get competing quotes because the price seemed like a good value for what we were getting and we wanted to work with Ed after seeing pictures of his previous work and meeting him in person. After seeing the finished work product I can definitely say that we got a good value considering the quality of the finished work and the easy process of working with Ed. As I mentioned above, the painted cabinets had a dramatic impact and made the kitchen feel brand new.
He came in and did his job, and was very interested that we liked what he did.
The next contact I had with him was a voice message on my phone, saying he did not want to do the job. Then he gave me the name of someone he "knew" and that maybe should call him.
I never called.
"Here's the sequence of events from when his first email came in on Father's Day, Sunday June 19. On Tues. the 21st I looked at the projects on his email & could see it had items I didn't deel comfortable in bidding on. However, as a courteous gesture I asked for his address to see if he was close by where I could stop in and give him some ideas and refer someone else. When I received his address (which was not close to me) I could see it would be better to connect him with someone who could do everything on his list... and even stop by and look at his jobs. I personally called the member to let him know it wouldn't work for me, and left a reputable contractors name and number for him to call. I also gave him info on the contractor. That contractor did call the member but he did not call the contractor, nor did he ever call me.After getting the notice from Angie's List (an F from someone I had never met) I called the member again and left a message indicating I'd appreciate talking to him as I'd like to grow from the experience and better understand what I did wrong. He never called me. A little added perspective may help... I chose the phone as a very personal way to communicate with him and went out of my way to suggest a reputable contractor. Also note, his email came on Father's Day which was the same day I received a new computer. The new computer didn't work out and we had to get a different one. During this time, and even to the present day, there are bugs being worked out. Some people aren't getting my emails and I wonder if I'm not getting some myself. I say this because I chose to make sure the member was communicated with by calling him, and, as his comments reveal, he received it. I'm not sure what I did wrong and for him to grade me as he did only leaves me wondering. How was this fair, I never even looked at the job, and I responded to his inquiry in a quick manner!"
