Deck and Porch Service
We hired John Taylor to complete a number of projects – new back deck and front porch, guest and master bathroom remodels, painting and some minor outdoor fixes. The lure of one contractor being able to complete all of our projects was too good to be true. The rebuild of our 16x10 rear deck turned out very disappointing. The frame was attached to the house out of position by several inches which compromised the design of the entire deck. Lack of attention to detail and poor finishing was a constant source of frustration. Measurements and cuts weren’t precise, the spacing of the deck boards wasn’t uniform and joins weren’t flush. The spindles on the railings are uneven. Even when we pointed these things out, John didn’t seem to really care. He seemed more focused on doing things fast. The deck looks like a DIY job and not the work of a professional contractor. We expected a lot better for the money we paid. The building of steps was a particular problem both with the deck and front porch. We also had him replace some side steps at a side door which have already become detached from the house. He regularly arrived at 10am and left at 3pm and rarely worked a full day. The final straw was the replacing of some rotted garage door trim with PVC. It looks rushed, shoddy and unprofessional. At that point, we decided to part ways. To be fair, some of the work done was reasonable. We were satisfied with the guest bathroom remodel, but this was a relatively small job. The interior painting was fair although we were promised that our furniture and floors would be covered during painting and they weren’t. We had our cathedral ceiling painted which looks good. Ultimately, a lot of the work just seemed rushed and we just didn’t trust that the attention to detail would be good enough for the master bath remodel. We decided to hire somebody else to finish the project.
