I knew that the two most common treatments to address this problem were either a standard water softener using salt or this green sand filter which uses the green sand and oxygen to precipitate out the iron and manganese. Since my well water wasn't particularly hard and I didn't want all that salt in my water, I decided to go with the green sand filter.
I called the company and spoke to Mr. Winter. I asked him a bunch of questions as if I didn't know anything. He also asked me a bunch of questions and then scheduled a visit to come out and take a look at my well to make sure the problem wasn't being caused by surface water leaking into my well. He dropped a camera down my well to have a look.
After his investigation, he recommended this oxidating catalyst system using the green sand filter media.
He came over about a week later and installed it. Huge difference in our water quality! It smells and tastes great.
Mr. Winter was extremely knowledgeable and professional the whole time. He was patient in answering my questions. He didn't talk down to me and spoke in plain English without using a bunch of technical terms.
What I really appreciated was that he took the time to investigate and make sure that a less expensive solution wasn't available. Then he outlined the options for me so I could make the decision. I know that a regular water softener is cheaper but it also requires more maintenance and you have to deal with all that salt.
I was very happy with his company and recommend them 100%. He is based in Brunswick but had no problem coming up to the Augusta area and said that he often travels even further than that.
