After digging the beds for the Leyland Cypress, Mr. Buck (proprietor and sole full-time employee of the company), who had taken a $1,200 deposit for the job (50 percent), simply disappeared for about five weeks and ignored dozens of phone messages from us. We finally found his home address and went to his home to find out why he had vanished. He told us he'd had a death in the family in Memphis and had only returned to Baltimore that day, and he promised to start our job the coming week. At our insistence, he wrote us a check for $1,200, which we said we'd tear up once he started the job. He showed up that week and planted six (not 10) Leyland cypresses, then disappeared again. The check he wrote bounced. We managed to reach him once by phone after that, at which point he said he'd come finish the job that week. He didn't, and we've neither seen him nor heard from him since. We considered legal action, but decided it would be more trouble than it was worth.
